A classroom is 11 m long, 8 m wide and 5 m high. Find the sum of the areas
of its floor and the four walls (including doors, windows, etc.)
[3 marks]
[R.D. Sharma-Ex 21.3, Q 10]

Given:

Length of the room (l) = 11 m

Breadth of the room (b) = 8 m

Height of the box (h) = 5 m

Area of the floor of the room = l × b

                                                      = 11 m × 8 m
                                                      = 88 m 2

[1 mark]

Area of four walls = 2(lh+bh)

                                 = 2[(11 × 5)+(8 × 5)]

                                 = 2(55+40)

                                 = 2(95) = 190 m 2

[1.5 marks]

Total area = 88 m + 190 m = 278 m

3. Find the side of a cube whose surface area is 600 cm .  2

[2 marks]
[NCERT-Ex 11.3, Q 3]

 A. 11 cm

 B. 10 cm

 C. 9 cm

 D. 8 cm
Let the side length of the cube be a units.
Surface area of a cube is 6a sq. units. 2

[0.5 mark]
⇒ 6a = 600 cm
2 2

⇒ a = 100 cm
2 2

⇒ a = 10 cm

[1.5 marks]

∴ The side of the cube is 10 cm.

4.
The blue paint bottle covers an area of 600 cm . Will one bottle be sufficient
2

to paint the entire cylindrical block given below?

[Use π = 3.14]

[2 marks]
Diameter of the cylindrical block = 10 cm
10
So, its radius (r) = = 5 cm  2

Height of cylindrical block = 14 cm

[0.5 mark]

Surface area of the cylindrical block = 2πr(r + h)

= 2 × 3.14 × 5(5 + 14)

= 596.6 cm 2

[1 mark]

The blue paint bottle can cover an area of 600 cm , so it will be sufficient to
2

paint the entire cylindrical block.

5. A godown is in the form of a cuboid of measures 60 m × 40  m × 30  m. How

many cuboidal boxes can be stored in it if the volume of one box is 0.8 m ? 3

[2 marks]
[NCERT-Example 9]
Volume of the godown = 60 m × 40 m × 30 m
= 72000 m

6. How many cubic metres of Earth must be dug to construct a well 14 m deep
and of diameter 1.8 m?
[2 marks]

 A. 44 m 3

 B. 35.64 m 3

 C. 40 m 3

 D. 64.12 m 3

Given, height (h) = 14 m

Diameter = 1.8 m
1.8
So, radius (r) = m = 0.9 m 2

[0.5 mark]

Volume of a cylinder = πr 2
h

[0.5 mark]
22
So, volume of earth to be dug = 7
× 0.9 m × 0.9 m × 14 m

= 35.64 m

Find the surface area of a cube whose volume is 343 m . 3

[3 marks]
[R.D. Sharma-Ex 21.3, Q 4(i)]

 A. 90 m 2

 B. 49 m 2

 C. 59 m 2

 D. 294 m 2

3
Volume of a cube = (side)
3
So, 343 m = (side) 3

⇒ 7 m × 7 m × 7 m = 343 m
3

So, side of the cube is 7 m.
