Content Objective (CO)

Cultural awareness: Students will be able to recognize, name and describe different birds of
Ecuador.
Language Objectives (LO):

Listening : Students will listen to a song about birds and will repeat it with the teacher.

Speaking : Students will be able to describe the body parts of the birds.

Reading : Students will read a short text about Ecuadorian hummingbirds.

Writing : Students will describe their favorite Ecuadorian bird.

Key Vocabulary:

 Birds (hummingbirds, toucans, parrots, and pigeons)


 Body parts of the birds (beak, wings, feather, tail)
 Adjectives (small, big, short, long, bright)
 Grammar structure:
They are __(small/big)___.
They have ___(color)___ feathers.

Material Needed:

 English module
 Speakers
 Bird noises sounds
 The bird song
 Lyrics of the bird song
 Markers
 Box
 Printed birds

Warm up activity ( 5 min)

The teacher says:

 The teacher tells students to do an action (e.g., the teacher says ... jump 3 times) and
students have to do it only if they hear “The teacher says”
 If the teacher tells them to do an action without saying “The teacher says” (e.g., jump 3
times) students doesn’t have to do it or they lose.
Activation: A Canvas of Opportunity

(5 min)

Directions:

 The teacher will show a box in front of the class and ask them to imagine what is inside.
 The teacher will take printed Ecuadorian birds out of the box and ask students to
recognize what are those images. (birds)
 The teacher will show each bird at a time and ask What’s this?
 The teacher and students will answer: It’s a toucan / It’s a hummingbird. At the same
time, the teacher will play an audio of the noise that the bird makes and repeat the name
of the bird twice.
 The teacher will pin the bird images on the board in different locations and write its name
under each picture.
 The teacher will play the audio of one bird noise and ask students to recognize which was
the bird (hummingbirds, toucans, parrots, and pigeons)

(15 min)

Directions:

 The teacher will draw a big bird next to the images and will write the name of its body
parts (beak, wings, feather, tail)
 The teacher will point a part of the bird and ask the students What’s this? and they must
answer correctly (repeat the action to all the parts).
 The teacher will ask students to describe orally each bird, using adjectives and the
following structures:

Toucans are __(small/big)___.


Toucans have ___(color)___ feathers.
Toucans have __(short/long)___tails.
 The teacher gives the students the lyrics of the bird song, putting emphasis on the body
parts of the bird and explain how to sing it with mimes.
 After learning all the mimes, the students sing along with the teacher and without help.

Directions: (10 min)

 Students read a short text “Hummingbirds” on the English module page 17.
 The class discuss about what they understood of the reading.
 After that, students must complete activity number 2 (describe their favorite Ecuadorian
bird) making use of the new vocabulary and grammar structured.
