Related Issue 4 - To what extent should individuals and groups

in Canada embrace a national identity?

For this unit, you will be looking at the understandings of Canadian identity. Your task is to gather as much
information as you can about different perspectives of what it means to be a Canadian. You also need to decide
what is the best way for you to present your findings. It is expected that there will a creative component to your
presentation, but that could be done a variety of ways. Your final project needs to clearly answer the key question.

Step One – gathering information

- Using the class discussions (including information from previous units), research and other sources, find
information that will help you to explain the following:
o Ways that Canada has tried to develop a national identity (both in the past and today)
▪ Can include founding myths, institutions and symbols
o The challenges of promoting a Canadian national identity
o Aboriginal perspectives on what it means to be a Canadian
o Francophone and Quebecois perspectives on what it means to be a Canadian
o Albertan perspectives on what it means to be a Canadian
o Immigrant perspectives on what it means to be a Canadian
o Your personal opinion on the promotion of a Canadian national identity
Your information should be 2-3 full pages of information

Step Two – organizing your information

Now that you have gathered a plethora of information, you need to figure out what is most important to
demonstrate your understanding of Canadian nationalism. This will also help you to figure out how you want to
present your ideas because you will want to organize your information in a way that will help you to get organized
for your project. You need to ensure that all of bullets in step one are somehow represented in your presentation.
