KODO TAIKO DRUM FESTIVAL

ANMIEL: History is the bodies of knowledge about the past produced by historians, Us.
Together with everything that is involved in the production, communication of, and
teaching about knowledge.
So now on let’s talk about KODO TAIKO DRUM FESTIVAL. So there’s anyone here
have an idea about Kodo?

Rhod: Therefore, Kodo was formed in 1981 and made their debut at the Berliner
Philharmonie in the same year. It considered to be simply renamed from the taiko group
Ondekoza in 1971.
Anmiel: One of the taiko performer and founder of the group of Ondekoza is Den
tagayasu. Den tagyasu left the group before the transition and lead performer Eitetsu
harashi left quikly thereafter.
Tagayasu continued to use the name of Ondekoza for his new group, and required the
group to choose a new name.
Rhod: But Hayashi begin a solo career after departed from the group. Hayashi created
the name “KODO” based on the dual meaning.
“Drum children” from mothers that their music lulled their children to sleep.
“Heartbeat” comparing the sound of taiko drums came from the mother’s heartbeat on
her child in the womb.
Anmiel: Let’s proceed to Taiko Drums. Of course all of you have a basic thought about
Drum. So what is taiko drum?
Taiko drum existed in japan over 2000 years ago. It may have come to Japan around 5 th
or 6th century with the influences of buddhism brought from China.
It may been used for communication and religious ritual. It was also used to motivate
troops, to call out orders or announcements.
Rhod: Taiko drums were also used in the court style music called Gagaku which was
performed at the Classical Noh Theatre, and very known as kabuki theatre.
Nowadays, Taiko drums are also used at festival.
Anmiel: There are two types of Taiko Construction.
“Byo-uchi-daiko” kind of taiko drum with nailed heads
“Shime-daiko” tensioned Drum
Rhod: In the ensemble of taiko often find the Odaiko which is the largest drum of all
taiko find inside the temple or shrine. Around 300 mm diameter up to 3.7m diameter.
“Chudaiko or Nagadodaiko” the most commonly used. Refers to the size of a drum not a
type.
