Overfishing occurs when fish populations are depleted due to excessive fishing. It threatens the long-term viability of aquatic ecosystems and species populations. Overfishing has been an issue since the 1800s when whale and fish populations were drastically reduced to support industries like oil production. More recently, industrial fishing has reduced huge ocean fish populations to only 10% of pre-industrial levels. Overfishing damages habitats like coral reefs and can endanger keystone species that maintain ecosystem balance, like parrotfish that create white sandy beaches.

Overfishing, is a type of Environmental Sin under the section of Overexploitation of Natural
Resources. Although renewable; different types of species of aquatic animals can be conserved if taken care of and handled responsibly and if handled poorly, not only the aquatic animals will suffer but also their natural habitats which will be difficult to restore and for the aquatic animals to rehabilitate and re- populate. What is overfishing? Overfishing is defined as an eradication of a certain or any types of fishes in a body of water at a large quantity resulting in under population and possibly, extinction. This type of sin has a long history of destruction in aquatic ecosystem dated back in 1800s according to National Geographic when humans begun foraging blubbers for lamp oil at Stellwegen Banks, Massachusetts, USA. A scientific research published in 2003 claimed that industrial fishing has reduced the population of huge ocean fish to barely 10% of its pre-industrial level. countless of whales were killed as well as other types of aquatic animals, Aquatic resources were plundered and pillaged, Habitats were destroyed and coral reefs were damaged due to the insatiable greed of human beings. Due to these factors, Aquatic ecosystems were severely damaged and some are irreparable due to human interactions. Example of this are the Parrot Fishes which are responsible for the creation of white sandy beaches. Eating algae off of coral reefs that turns into a white sand when secreted as feces. Endangering this particular species can cause setbacks in the balance of the ecosystem because of the depletion of white sand which is non-renewable and is responsible for protection against large waves.
