Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

Studying while working is not easy but very wonderful. It is where you can gain a

lot of experiences that you can use while studying. You are enhancing your capability in

managing and balancing your time on doing two things at the same time, finishing your

task and making a lot of opportunities for your own growth. Studying while working

makes us as a well rounded individual, making us matured enough to conquer all the

challenges we will encounter in our daily life.

Working is part of being independent, everyone works maybe for their own good

and maybe for their better future. Knowing the consequences of doing two things at the

same time makes you feel the essence of life that full of hard works and determination to

achieved your goals and dreams for your life. Working also makes us a professional

being and sharpens our mind in decision making. Enlightens us that the outside world is

not that scary, you just have to embrace the opportunity that was given for you in order to

cope up on the reality of life. Being a working student, you are practising yourself being a

responsible person.

Today students are less prepared for college-level work than their predecessors.

Once they get to college, they tend to spend fewer hours studying while spending more

hours working, some even full time (D. T. Smart, C. A. Kelley, & J. S. Conant, 1999). In

this study, the authors examined the effect of both time spent studying and time spent

working on academic performance. The authors further evaluated the interaction of

motivation and ability with study time and its effect on academic performance. The

results suggested that nonability variables like motivation and study time significantly

interact with ability to influence academic performance. Contrary to popular belief, the

amount of time spent studying or at work had no direct influence academic performance.

The authors also addressed implications and direction for future . Barone (1993) believes

that many students who work find some problems balancing school and work demands.

They have hard time coping up in school activities. According to Worley(1995) many

students who work part-time have limited participation in extracurricular activities

because they are busy on their job. Many researches indicating that employment have

negatively affected students academic achievement stated that an increase in the amount

of hours worked influenced factors (Hope,1990)

Framework of the Study

The study concerns about the Life of a Working Student Surviving and Combatting

Challenges in a competitive environment.

The present study talks about how they survive in managing their time. It presents

different theories that will support the the study.

Theories and Concepts on the Effect of Being a Working Student to the Academic

Performance and How they manage their time.

Human Capital Theory(Becker, 1964). In this theory, student employment can

be a compliment to education due to additional skills and knowledge obtained while

working.There are several reasons why student work may lead to such an increase in

human capital. First, student employment must apply in their self, the work values,

communication skills and sense of time management. Second, combining study and work

may offer students the opportunity to apply and practice what they have learned in

school. Third, student employment may increase future-oriented and hereby motivate

student to work harder in school in order to achieve a certain goal.

Assessing working students' college experiences: a grounded theory

approach (Cheng, D.X). This study explores working students' college experiences

using the grounded theory approach. Focus groups were conducted to allow working

students to elaborate on their college experiences, clarifying issues not easily addressed

through surveys. Two theoretical propositions are offered to describe how working

students are constantly searching for meaninagful work as well as meaning in their work.

It is important for institutions to consider work as an educationally purposeful activity

outside classroom and to create job opportunities that benefit students academically,

socially and financially.

Primary Orientation Theory (Casteren, V.). This theory suggests the worse

academic performance of working students related to their primary orientation being

toward work rather than toward school. It reflects a disengagement from school that

existed before the decision to work was made rather than negative effect due to student

employment itself.

Allocation of Time/Zero-Sum Theory (Becker, 1965).This theory suggests that

student employment and education are substitutes.In this case ,student employment

strongly contains students use of time.Time spent working crowds out time spent on

activities that enhance academic performance such as studying,doing homework and

attending classes.Student workers may cutback on leisure time without reducing the time

they dedicate to school-related activities.Working student also scale down the time spent

on non-school related activities.

Statement of the Problem

The study determined the life of a working student in a competitive environment.

Specifically, the study answered the following questions:

1. How do working student manage their time and effort being an employee and a

student surviving in a competitive environment?

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of this research report, the following terms are

operationally defined:

Academic Performance refers to the result of the students performance in school

and how the student deal with their studies.

Time management refers how to balance time excellently between work and

study.

Working student refers to the students working while studying and also gaining

experiences and money for their expences in school and for personal needs.

Importance of the Study

The importance of this study is to give information and knowledge about being a

working student. Knowing how to balance their time between work and study ensuring

that they get their goals properly and briefly setting their bright future. And to persuade

and encourage other students to understand the benefits of having a work while studying,

it have a lot of benefits in being a working student.To have a better understanding about

the real essence of being a working student.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The research uses case study design which gives an in depth description about the

students who are also working. It explains certain events and situation why students

preferred to have a job that certainly affects their academic performance and participation

in school activities.

Sources of Data (Materials and Procedures)

The participants of the study are three students from Rosario Integrated School, two

female and one male. They are skilled working student from Grade 11 and 12 senior high

school who are discipline in managing their time in doing two things at the same time.

This study is non probability and the participants are willing to participate in the current

research study. The researcher uses purposive sampling because the participants are all

working student and they purposely interview them to know the answer from their

research study.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The study gathered information through partipants observation and in depth

interview, asking questions relevant and objective to the research study. The researchers

will interview the participants in one hour depending on how long their interaction will

last. They interact with each other in a form of conversation and interview while

explaining to them the questions objectively.

Analysis of Data

The recorded interview was used to got deeper knowledge why students prefer to have

a job while studying. It gives an overview on being a student surviving daily challenges

in life knowing that they are also doing their part time job. The researchers uses open

coding to analyse the data and to come up with a theme.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The profile of our participant is show in this figure. During the interview, the researchers

introduce their name as well as their age and explain the purpose of the research and what

is the study all about.The researcher also tell that all the answers of his/ her participants

will always be confidential and they also remind that if she/he is uncomfortable to

answered it is okay to not answered.The researchers asked the participant about their

demographical details and all interview are audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim.

determined its essence in the study

A."kasi mababait naman sila and almost ano uhm kaya nilang makihalubilo sa amin or

ginagalang din namin sila." (Good Interaction and Self-disciplined) it shows that having a

good relationship with your co-workers and giving them respect can make you last and

comfortable to your work.

B."Yung una gagawin ko muna mga trabaho ko sa bahay tas lahat pag natapos ko na

tsaka ako magtratrabaho tas yun lang.Gawin ko muna mga dapat kong gawin sa bahay tas

magtratrabaho na ako" (Proper Time Management) its distinguish that having a plan or

what first thing to do to finish all the task can help you to balance your time between

work and study and it can also help every working student how can they manage their

time by doing plan or not wasting time in nonsense things.

C."binibigyan nila ako ng mga isang araw para tapusin ang isang activity"(Giving

Consideration) it represents that giving enough time by teacher can helps every working

student to cope up to their studies as well to take rest and that by means it can make every

working student to pursue or continue working for the sake of their family and can help

in their expenses .

D.”kapag nasa work ka work lang, kapag nasa school uhm school lang talaga hindi ka

umiisip sa ibang trabaho ganon. (Focus and concentration in one thing ). it shows that

when you are in work do your responsibilities and just focus on what you are doing in

able to finish your work and giving full attention in your work can help you to enhance

your capability in working

E."Para kwan,pinili ko maging working student para hindi na hindi na ako umasa sa

parents ko na bigyan ako ng pera kasi ayaw naman nila kaya mas mabuting ako nalang

gumawa ng sarili kong paraan para mapagaral ko yung sarili ko ng kusa."(Independent

and Determined) being determined in what you are doing it can help you to achieve your

goals or dream and determination can lead you to become a success and showing your

independent side makes you to become stronger enough to face the competitive

enviroment and makes you also to become matured about how to live in the reality of

world.

In table 3 discusses the five themes that concluded in the study of being a working

student

The results of the study is summed up in this figure.In our study five themes are

presented and shown generated by interview.These are the following:kasi mababait

naman sila and almost ano uhm kaya nilang makihalubilo sa amin or ginagalang din

namin sila (Good Relationship and Self-disciplined),"Yung una gagawin ko muna mga

trabaho ko sa bahay tas lahat pag natapos ko na tsaka ako magtratrabaho tas yun

lang.Gawin ko muna mga dapat kong gawin sa bahay tas magtratrabaho na ako" (Proper

time management),binibigyan nila ako ng mga isang araw para tapusin ang isang

activity" (Giving consideration),"kapag nasa work ka work lang, kapag nasa school uhm

school lang talaga hindi ka umiisip sa ibang trabaho ganon" (Focus and Concentration in

one thing),"Para kwan,pinili ko maging working student para hindi na hindi na ako umasa

sa parents ko na bigyan ako ng pera kasi ayaw naman nila kaya mas mabuting ako nalang

gumawa ng sarili kong paraan para mapagaral ko yung sarili ko ng kusa."(Independent

and Determined) .

Good Relationship shows that having a good interaction and relationship with your

co-workers and boss can make you to become comfortable to your work and stay with

it.Being self-disciplined or giving respect to your co-workers and boss make you to build

their trust and it can last your good interaction/relationship with them .Self-disciplined is

one of the key to have a good interaction with other people .It creates positivity and

improves work satisfaction .It also helps to create a happy, healthy and productive work

and personal life.

Theme 2:"Yung una gagawin ko muna mga trabaho ko sa bahay tas lahat pag

natapos ko na tsaka ako magtratrabaho tas yun lang.Gawin ko muna mga dapat

kong gawin sa bahay tas magtratrabaho na ako" (Time management)

Proper time management means using their time effectively and planning for

accomplishing each work to be done. Like what the other participant said "Time

management lang" its show that managing your time effectively makes you to

accomplish your work and study and you can able to balance your time between work

and study. Doing a proper time management can help you a lot to handle such an hard

situation of being a working student and by doing it you will know and value the

importance of time in this world .It can help you to be more productive in using your

time.

Theme 3.”binibigyan nila ako ng mga isang araw para tapusin ang isang

activity" (Consideration)

Giving consideration makes everyone to cope up in something or in able to catch

up .Being considerate of a teacher make her student to continue working because giving

consideration you are showing that you are supporting what she was doing and you are

allowing her to catch up and cope up to her missed studies. "kapag pagod ka na uhm

sabihin mo lang, kinokonsider nila kung.. kinokonsider nila kasi nga galing ka nga sa

work kaya alam nila na pagod ka.Kinokonsider nila yun minsan" The statement shows

that one of the source/helping out a working student to cope up or balamace their time is

their teacher. They are allowing there students who are working to have a excuses jf they

are tired and given enough time to accomplish their requirements they missed.

Theme 4.”kapag nasa work ka work lang, kapag nasa school uhm school lang

talaga hindi ka umiisip sa ibang trabaho ganon.”(Concentration in working)

The statement shows that focusing on your duties makes you accomplish what you

are doing and doing your responsibilities can help to improve your skill in working.

Concentration means focusing your time and mind on something before doing anything,

finishing your priorities and responsibilities as a student and an employee.

Theme 5. "Para kwan,pinili ko maging working student para hindi na hindi na

ako umasa sa parents ko na bigyan ako ng pera kasi ayaw naman nila kaya mas

mabuting ako nalang gumawa ng sarili kong paraan para mapagaral ko yung sarili

ko ng kusa." (Being independent)

It shows how determination helps to pursue your studies while working despite of

many challenges you are encountering if you are determined enough to finish all your

goals you can achieve and make it. Being independent also helps to become a skilled

individual that you can apply in your study and can help you for your better future. You

gather a lot of experience that you can use to become an independent person. The

statement of the participant shown that being independent can help you a lot in the near

future and being determined on what you are doing can make you achieve your goal in

life despite of struggles you’ve faced.

Chapter 4

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary/Conclusion

The study aims to determined how working student survived in dealing challenges

and how they manage their time. In this study the researcher finds out that being a

working student is hard but you are gaining experiences that you can use in your daily

life and for the near future and you are also enhancing your skills in working and being a

responsible individual. The study answered the statement of the problem on how a senior

high school working student survive and combat challenges. It states that you need to

manage your time properly by balancing and finishing important task before doing

anything. You need to become responsible and discipline to achieve your goal. The

researchers come up with this result by interviewing the participants and asking questions

that was audio recorded and transcribed verbatim and with the use of this the researchers

came up with their codes and themes.

1. Good interaction and good relationship

One of the code in this study that generates the theme “Good Relationship and Self-

Disciplined” which defines that having a good relationship with other people makes

you comfortable working with them. And it makes you to work more easier with a

good communication with your co-workers and the management.

2. Managing Time Effectively

This code generates the theme “ Proper Time Management” that is very important

aspect to accomplished your goal and activities. It is not wasting your time on

nonsense things instead it is using your time effectively for your responsibilities as a

student, worker and responsibilities in your family.

3. Being Independent

This is the code that generates the theme “Independent and Determination” which

defines that having a work makes you as an independent person and with

determination you can do make it all despite of many obstacles in your daily life if

you are determined to finish it then you can achieve it.

4. Concentration in working

One of the code that generate the theme “Focus and Concentration” which means that

you are giving your attention to finish one task at a time not minding anything while

doing things what you must do.

5. Giving Enough Time

This code generates the theme “Giving Consideration” which is very important for

working students. They are given a time to comply to their missed activities and

projects so that they will not be left behind on the topics.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are

offered:

1. Students should be responsible in managing their time and they must know what are

their responsibilities at home, work and school.

2. Learners must also spend some time to rest and have a time to have a bonding with

their friends and family.

3. Parents should guide their children properly especially for their safety in work and in

school.

4. Working students must also know how to cooperate in school activities and

communicate with other people.
