REPORT OF THE SESSION

An open house debate on the topic- ‘Should death penalty be abolished?’ was organized by
Manthan, the debating society of VIPS in the presence of faculty coordinators Dr. Sahil Kaul,
Dr. Anuradha Mishra and Dr. Chetna Bhatia on November 11 that started at 2:00 PM and was
concluded at 3:55 PM.

The participants were Shayan Ahmad Shamim, Aryan Garg, Utkarsh Raj, Harsh Singh, Harshit
Kalra, Yash Mehra, Mannat Arora, Punyanjali Bhardwaj, Mitansh Dawda, Himanshi Yadav,
Aditi Aastha, Omika Rakesh, Mohak and Tanushree Phogat.

Harsh Singh was the moderator and initiated the event by introducing the topic. Punyanjali
started the debate by putting forth the point that death penalty directly scraps the right to life
and thus should be abolished and gave her agreement towards the motion. Shayan countered
this stating that death penalty is not listed in IPC but in CRPC, he further talked about the case
of Bachchan Singh vs Punjab police and stood against the motion. The debate initially revolved
around the moral grounds wherein Yash, Aditi, Tanushree, Mitansh, and Mannat brought to
light the humane and philosophical factors related to death penalty and sided in favor of its
abolition, supporting the same view Aryan presented some statistics indicating an error of 25%
in death penalty cases which gave a new direction to the debate. Himanshi added that the
intentions of the crime should be kept in mind. Shayan brought up the doctrine of rarest of the
rare.
The debate ended with the concluding remarks of all the participants. Most of the opinions
stood in favor of the motion and emphasized the abolition of death penalty.
