Research Question (answer cannot be known):
To what extent of looking at a screen that emits blue light (phone/computer)
before going to bed affect a person’s quality of sleep?

Hypothesis: Using a device that emits blue light before going to bed will make
a person’s quality of sleep worse.

Why is your research interesting and important?

Studies have shown that looking at blue light before going to bed can disrupt a
person’s sleeping schedule, causing them to not be able to fall asleep, wake
up randomly in the middle of the night, or wake up not feeling well rested.
Variables
Independent (conditions that you will change in the experiment):
1. Going to bed immediately after looking at phone
2. Going to bed after not looking at phone for 30 minutes
3. Going to bed immediately after looking at phone (using blue light filtering
glasses)

Dependent (conditions you will observe and measure):

Quality of sleep

Controlled (aspects that you will keep consistent):

1. Time person goes to bed
2. Person’s position in bed
3. Time person wakes up
Control Experiment (if any): n/a

Materials:
Nelson ::: ENGL 1302 ::: Fall 2022

 cell phone (or any other source of blue light)

 alarm clock
 blue light filtering glasses

Method:
 On night 1, person uses the phone until 30 minutes before set time to go
to sleep.
 On night 2, person uses the phone until the set time to go to sleep.
 On night 3, person uses the phone while wearing blue light filtering
glasses until the set time to go to sleep.
 Person wakes up at a set time in the morning and rates their quality of
sleep. Additionally, they mention any other feelings, such as having a
headache, or their eyes hurt.

Diagram (graphically represent how you will record results from your
experiment ):
