Directions (21-28): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions
given below it. Certain words are given in bold to help you locate them while
answering some of the questions.
An announcement by an international team of astronomers about the
discovery of phosphine gas in the atmosphere of Venus triggered global excitement
about the possibility of the presence of life forms on the neighbouring planet.
Apart from being produced in industrial processes, phosphine, a colourless but
smelly gas, is known to be made only by some species of bacteria that survive in
C
the absence of oxygen.
In a paper reported (A) in Nature Astronomy, a team of scientists have
approximately (B) traces of phosphine in a concentration of published (C) 20
parts per billion, thousands to millions of times more than what could otherwise
be expected.
No one is saying that as of now. What scientists have discovered is the
presence of a chemical which is known to be produced only through biological
process, and not through any naturally occurring chemical process. There are
some other ways in which this chemical might be produced, for example, in the
underbelly of volcanoes or meteorite activity, but that would have shown in much
lower concentrations. In any case, scientists have ruled out all those kinds of
known possibilities which could be ___________ for the presence of that gas.
In fact, this discovery was made in 2017, and the scientists checked and re-
checked their data over the last three years before deciding to make it public.

3
Sreedhar’s CCE SB I PO PRELI M S M T- 2

The abstract to their paper in Nature Astronomy says this presence of phosphine
is unexplained after an exhaustive study of all the possible other sources and
production routes in Venus’s atmosphere, clouds, surface and subsurface, or
from lightning, volcanic or meteorite delivery. So, the only possible explanation
for the origin of this phosphine, based on our current knowledge, could be in the
biological processes, the way it is produced on Earth, by some microbes. Scientists
were very careful to emphasize, repeatedly, that this was not a confirmation of
the presence of life on Venus. This is the most credible evidence yet for the
possibility of life away from Earth. Scientists say it is more significant, for example,
than the discovery of water on the Moon or Mars.

r’s
21. What is the conclusion of the scientists about the phosphine gas on the atmosphere
of Venus?
1) They concluded that the phosphine gas was formed due to microbial activity
2) They denied the fact about the presence of life on earth.
ha
3) That phosphine gas does not confirm the presence of life, there is a possibility
of life.
4) That phosphine gas is produced by the extra-terrestrial organism on the Venus

E
5) That no further investigation is required for the life on Venus, based on current
knowledge.
d
22. What does the paper in Nature Astronomy imply?
1) That scientists decided to hide the phosphine gas Venus till they gain further
ee

knowledge.
2) The phosphine gas is produced in volcanic activities.
3) The atmosphere of Venus has higher temperatures and does not support life.
C
4) The presence of phosphine gas is unexplained from the atmospheric conditions.
5) That phosphine gas is a clear sign of life on Venus
Sr

23. What are the various process through which Phosphine gas is generated?
1) It is produced through industrial processes
2) It is being respirated through some biological processes
3) It is formed from small bacteria
4) Some microbials that survive without oxygen are responsible for Phosphine gas
5) All of these
C
24. Choose the true statement(s) from the given options, in according to the above
passage.
I. The concentration of identified Phosphine gas is about 20 parts per billion.
