April 1710
Four sachems (chiefs) of the Six Nations, N.Y. State, accompanied by Col. Peter Schuler, Co. Frances Nicholson,
and Capt. Abraham Schuyler, Interpreter were travelling to the Court of Queen Anne in London, England. The four
sachems were as follows:
• Te Ye Neen Ho Ga Prow of the Wolf Clan or totem, Christianized the simplier form of Henrick, Emperor of
the Six Nation
• Saga Yea Qua Prob Ton of the Bear Clan (Brant) “King of the Maquas”
• Oh Nee Yeath Ton No Prow, of the Wolf Clan (John) “King of the Ganjoh-Hore”
• Elow Ob Kaom or E Tow Oh Koam of the Tortoise Clan (Nicholas) “King of the River Nation”
During the second week of April they arrived at Portsmouth on the naval ship “Reserve”. They pledged the loyalty
of the Six Nations to the Queen and she promised to build a fort and chapel and send Christian missionaries to the
Indians. On July 15, 1710, the sachems returned on the “The Man-of-War” to Boston.
1711
The Queen Anne Royal Chapel, a twenty-four feet square building of limestone, was constructed at the junction of
the Mohawk River and Schoharie Creek known as Fort Hunter, New York. Clergy of the Queen Anne Chapel were
as follows:
• 1712-1719 – The Rev. Wm. Andrews, Anglican Cleric
• 1735-1746 – The Rev. Barclay, Anglican Cleric
• 1748-1764 – The Rev. Oglivie, Anglican Cleric
During the American Revolution, Rev. John Stuart was appointed missionary to the Mohawks at Fort Hunter and
came to Canada. In 1785, he became the first Church of England missionary in the Western Settlements of
Canada and rector of St. George’s Church, Kingston.
1775 – 1783
American Revolution between Great Britain and her thirteen American Colonies
1785
Captain Joseph Brant led his Indian followers from the British Fort Niagara to their new home on the Grand River.
Their new abode was called Mohawk Village. The Mohawk Chapel was built in 1785, and bears the name “St.
Paul’s His Majesty’s Chapel of the Mohawks, erected by George III. The building of the chapel was in fulfillment of
the Haldimand pledge. John K. Smith, a loyalist and his sons, from the Hudson Valley built the chapel. Mohawk
Village grew around the Chapel, the Council House and the home of Joseph Brant.
1788
Dr. John Stuart described Mohawk Village as having a great number of good houses, with an elegant church and
steeple bell. He mentioned that during the church service the Psalmody was accompanied by an organ and there
was a communion service of plate and crimson furniture. The Indians were from his former charge in New York
and Mohawk Village contained about 700 souls. Rev. Dr. Addison of Niagara visited Mohawk Village twice a year
to perform baptisms and marriages. He was succeeded by the Rev. R. Leeming, resident of Ancaster, who visited
them occasionally.
February 7, 1793
Governor Simcoe arrived at Mohawk Village and remained a guest of Captain Joseph Brant until February 10th. On
March 6, 1793, on his return trip to Mohawk Village, Governor Simcoe was adopted as a chief.

1810
The Queen Anne Royal Chapel was destroyed because the area was needed for the building of the Erie Canal
which extended from Albany to Buffalo, New York.
1816
Hall’s Travels described the chapel service conducted by Aaron Hill, a grey-headed Mohawk, who touched his
cheeks and forehead with a few spots of vermillion or red cinnabar, in honour of Sunday. He wore a surplice and
preached in the Mohawk language.
1823
The New England Company for the Propagation of The Gospel assumed charge of the Six Nations Mission. Rev.
William Hough was sent out as the first resident missionary. He was followed by Rev. Robert Lugger who returned
to England in 1836 due to ill health and died shortly after.
1826
A meeting called to settle the name of the village “Brant’s Ford, was shortened to Brantford.
1829
The spire of the Mohawk Chapel was rebuilt to form an entrance porch, vestry and belfry. The lower three
feet of the wall was repaired and the entrance in the east was changed. The steeple was taken down to make
room for a small vestry on one side and a belfry on the other side.
The “Tablets of the Apostles” Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and The Ten Commandments in the Mohawk
language were removed from the West wall where the entrance is now. And with the pulpit which occupied the
centre of the South wall was placed at the east end.
The Brant family pew was on the west side of the pulpit and two pews on either side of the west side were
reserved for white members of the congregation. Pews were high-backed.
1830
The Chapel of the Mohawk was consecrated by the Bishop of Quebec.
1831
Rev. Abraham Nelles entered the service of the New England Company and was resident clergyman and Principal
of the Mohawk Institute from 1837-1872. He was assisted by Rev. A. Elliott.
1840’s
The Six Nations people began to move out to their Reserve.
1850
The body of Joseph Brant was exhumed at Wellington Square and placed in a tomb with his son John Brant in the
burial grounds beside the Mohawk Chapel.
1860
The Gothic windows were installed in the chapel.
1865
St. Paul’s Anglican Church was erected at Kanyugeh, down the Grand River or at the Tuscarora Mission Lot. It
was at this time that the Mohawk Chapel congregation began to decrease greatly because the Indian people began
to attend services at St. Paul’s, Kanyngeh.
1869
Changes were again made on the Mohawk Chapel. A brick foundation and basement was placed under the
church. The old painted altar rail was removed and replace by a semi-circular oak rail. The preaching box was
dispensed with and a reading desk was placed inside the communion rail where it stayed until 1886. Funds were
collected by Archdeacon Abraham Nelles and Alan Cleghorn, Brantford.
1904
Rev. Robert Ashton received permission from King Edward VII to declare it a Royal Chapel, the only one in the
world owned by native people.
1939
The estate of the late Thos. Foster of Toronto bequeathed $10,000 for the siding inside the chapel

There was $20, 000 raised through appeals and public support for a new foundation with a new furnace, kitchenette
and washrooms. An up-to-date sprinkler system was installed and a direct hook-up with the fire hall.
April 1, 1972
The Six Nations took over the Mohawk Institute. There was no longer a congregation of native students left to
worship at the Chapel.
Present Day
The Mohawk Chapel is open to group tours and for the public.
There are three old church registers of the Mohawk Chapel. These books were carefully kept in the vault at
the Mohawk Institute while it was a residential school for native children. When the school closed the books were
placed in the safe keeping of Grace Anglican Church, 15 Albion Street, Brantford, Ontario.
The first and oldest register has been rebound and dates from 1827 on and holds mostly Indian records,
especially baptisms. Although the Mohawk Chapel was built in 1785, there were no chapel records kept at that
time because there was no resident minister. Rev. Robert Lugger was appointed in October 1827 as a missionary
by The New England Company For The Propagation Of The Gospel In Foreign Parts. The first known record was
for a baptismal service, which was conducted on November 4, 1827, for the infants of six families. The second
volume is very fragile and consists of the baptisms of white children from 1827 and a few from 1821. The third
register has records of both white and Indian people from 1878 to 1943. All three registers contain both Indian and
white names.
In 1903, one of the registers of the period of 1841-1876 was lost in a fire at the Mohawk Institute. This
register represented about thirty-five years of history, which covers a period of time when census records were not
available because the keeping of census began in 1851 in Upper Canada.
There was a difference in the spelling of some of the" surnames, from one baptism to another and from one
Anglican minister to another one. The old Handsfield name-dropped the letter "h" in one record. The Indian name
Baptiste was spelled as Batist and Batiste; there is no mistake that it is the same family. Bearfoot and Barefoot was
spelled these two ways in the records. The family name Doxtater and Powlis had numerous spellings in the records
also.
The Indians also used the name of a tribe as their surname. There is a record of Elizabeth Cayuga, George
Tutli, Jemina Oneida and Joseph Oneida who claimed to belong to the Cayuga tribe. The hundreds of names in the
Indians Records represent eight tribes: Oneidas, Cayugas, Onondagas, Tutela, Tuscarora, Delaware and one
Ojiboway, Rev. Peter Jones who was baptized at the Mohawk Chapel in 1820. The majority of the names were
from the Mohawk tribe because the Mohawks were the largest tribal group to come with Captain Joseph Brant to
the Grand River.
One of the most interesting stories about Indian names is about the surname of Hilton Hill who told Mrs.
Luard the following story: "My father was John Hill, a Seneca Chief. My mother was a Mohawk. Grandmother's
name was Elizabeth Hill. Grandfather's name was Thomas Echo and when he married Elizabeth Hill, he did not
change his name, as was Indian custom instead he adopted the name Thomas Echo Hill. I was born at Ohsweken,
Kanyungeh.”
In all there are about 45 places of abode mentioned in the Indian Register before the year 1835 and after
that time period the native people just gave the Grand River as their place of residence. Fish carriers, Greens,
Herons, Kicks, Larence and Eleanor Thomas lived a mile from Salt Springs. Jacob and Hannah Cornelius, John
and Ellen Hill lived at Tuscarora Village. Hills, Greens, Kicks, Peter and Rachel Jacobs lived at Oneida Village.
Funns, Greens, Hills Johnsons, Powless and Staats lived at the Johnson settlement, Smoky Hollow and the Sandy
Banks.
The Adams, Carpenters, several Greens and Johnsons lived at the Aughquagh schoolhouse. Lawrence
Batiste, Clauses, Hills, Johnsons and Lofts who were all of the Mohawk tribe lived near The Martins. Moses and
Margaret Carpenter lived one mile from the Mohawk Chapel. Members of the Claus, David and Martin Family lived
at the Lower Mohawk, which is an extension of Blossom Ave. about half way down the Grand River. David and
Elizabeth Davids lived near the Mohawk Parsonage.
Six miles up the Grand River lived Henry and Hannah Bearfoot of the Oneida Tribe. Near the town of

Cayuga lived Peter and Sarah Hill. No distance seemed to great for native people to bring their children for
baptism!
In the Registers many families mentioned the distances from the Mohawk Chapel at their place of abode as
follows:
• 1 1/2 miles east of the church lived John and Mary Hill.
• 4 miles east of the church lived Peter and Sarah Hill.
• 3 miles west of the church lived the Lottridges.
• At the Forks of the Grand River, present day Paris, Ontario lived Mary and Seth Hill.
• Five miles below the church lived Anna and John Splitbush.
• 3 miles from the church lived Eleanor and Joseph Lotteridge and Thomas Thomas.
• On the planes lived Mary and Jacob Johnson.
• Toward the Sugar Bush lived Aaron and Catherine Johnson.
• At Cold Springs, which is near Paris, Ontario and now the Kitchen side road lived Surveyor
Augustus Jones, father of Rev. Peter Jones, Methodist Missionary on the New Credit Reserve
and James and Rachael Parker.
The early baptisms of White children by Rev. Robert Lugger included such Brantford names as twin
daughters of Dr. Alfred Digby, Samuel, son of Reuben Lennard, storekeeper, and William, son of Hugh Mulholland,
a farmer near the Brantford Gore. White infants were brought from as far as GaIt, Hamilton, Mt. Pleasant, Vittoria
and Woodhouse.
There are about 170 names can be accounted for at the burial grounds of the Mohawk Chapel. There are
many burials, which have no records at all. Captain Wm. Gilkinson suffered a stroke at the Tuscarora parsonage of
Rev. Abraham Nelles and was buried in an unmarked grave near the tomb of Joseph Brant and his son John.
Burials in the Mohawk burying ground include many familiar names among the Indian and White society.
The first burial recorded is 1829 when Harriott Lugger, wife of Rev. Lugger died. There are several records of
people dying in the 1830's. Aaron Hill, the Mohawk interpreter, friend of Joseph Brant, was stricken with cholera
and died in 1834. Chief John Brant, youngest son of Chief Joseph Brant, died of Asiatic cholera in 1834 and is
buried in the tomb with his father beside the chapel.
Among the Brant County families buried here were: Enos Bunnell, and his wife Cornelia Kennedy and their
daughter Sarah who were early pioneers; Lieutenant Col. E.D. Cameron, Indian Supt. Died in 1907 age 48, and his
wife Clara Leonard; Rev. Robert Ashton who died in 1930 and his wife Alice Turner who died in 1921. Rev.
Abraham Nelles died in 1884 at the age 79 years and his two wives with other Nelles family members.
Dr. Egerton Griffin died in 1897. In the Rev. Peter Jones' Diary, he writes that Dr. Griffin travelled to
Toronto with him in 1856 and Rev. Peter Jones suffered from heart disease and died soon after this trip. In 1856,
Dr. Griffin paid twenty-five dollars for a lot of four graves to the church fund.
On one stone was inscribed the names of Eliza Hanson and her four children ranging from six weeks to six
years who died in a seven-year period. Is it any wonder that the mother succumbed a year later at-the age of thirty-
seven in the year 1851?
One of the tombstones has the name} Elizabeth Weir, wife of Melchoir File, died July 18, 1852, inscribed
on it. Elizabeth Weir was the daughter of Robert Weir (1750-1797) and Sarah Weir (1757-1830) of the Mohawk
Valley in New York State. Melchoir File-Files was the son of Jacob File and Elizabeth Hayner of Brunswick Centre,
New York. The File-Files Family was United Empire Loyalists during the American Revolution. For their strong
loyalist stand Jacob File, his wife and family came to Canada because their neighbours gave them trouble for being
on the British side. Melchoir File is buried beside his wife in an unmarked grave.
Members of the Johnson Family are buried in the Mohawk Chapel burial grounds. Jacob Johnson, great
grandfather of poetess Pauline Johnson, died in 1843 at 85 years of age; his son Chief John Smoke Johnson died
1886 at 93 years of age; and his son Chief George Henry Martin Johnson, father of Pauline died Feb. 27, 1884 at
68 yrs; and the brothers of Pauline, Allan and H. Beverly are also buried here. Pauline's ashes were scattered in
Vancouver Park.
Chief Peter Green, an Oneida Chief, who died on Mar. 17, 1851, 62 years of age, is also buried here
with members of his family. Three years later, Chief George Martin, Mohawk Chief, was also buried here.
Charles D. Martin, clergyman at St. Paul's, Ohsweken, (Kanyungeh), died in 1883 at the age of 32.
The Tomb of Chief Joseph Brant and his son John reads as follows:

In the early days of Upper Canada marriage ceremonies were conducted in several different ways
depending upon the circumstances of the area: if the groom was in the military the commanding officer of the
military post or the adjutant of the military regiment read the marriage ceremony from the Book Of Common Prayer
and recorded it among his records; Justices of Peace chosen in the various areas of Upper Canada were given the
right to perform marriages in their areas. Few of these marriage records performed by the Justices of Peace exist
to-day; Protestant marriages were conducted by Anglican clergymen until ministers of the other denominations won
the right to conduct their own marriage ceremonies; and by 1857 all clergy had to register their marriages. These
records led to County Marriage Registers until June 30, 1869, than each marriage record was sent to the provincial
government in Toronto.
Before churches were built in the Brantford area people of all denominations worshipped at the Mohawk
Chapel. For the first forty years of the Mohawk Chapel there was no regular minister; consequently there was no
Marriage Book at the Mohawk Chapel for that period of time. The Marriage Records of the Mohawk Chapel
commenced with the first resident Minister J Rev. Robert Lugger in 1827. After ten years Rev. Lugger returned to
England and Archdeacon Robert Nelles served the Mohawk Chapel congregation for fifty years. Rev. Robert
Aston, principal of the Mohawk Institute, succeeded him. Some marriages were conducted in Grace Anglican
Church by Mohawk clergymen.
One of the pledges of Governor Haldimand was that a school and church shall be built wherever the
Mohawks shall settle and a clergyman shall be established for them. In November 1784, General Haldimand
instructed Feyster to award the building of the church to John K. Smith, United Empire Loyalist, who with his
seventeen-year-old son William K Smith had come from the Hudson Valley, N.Y. to the Grand River area. The
timber for the church was cut in the neighbourhood of Paris and the logs were floated down the Grand River.
The Mohawk Chapel was built in 1785, and bears the name, St. Paul's, Her Majesty's Chapel of the
Mohawks, erected by George III of Great Britain. The erection was in fulfillment of the pledge of Governor
Haldimand and it was built in Gothic style pertaining to country churches during that period of history.
The Bell
The church bell broke the hushed whisper of the tall fir trees around the chapel. The bell was housed under a
canopy close to the front entrance of the chapel. The inscription on the bell bears the following words:
"John Warner, Fleet Street, London, England, 1786"
The bell was stamped in the arms of the House of Hanover to which George III belonged. In 1873 the bell became
cracked and was disposed of for old metal, but was rescued by Chief George Johnson from the junk dealer.
The Bible
The inscription on the Bible cover reads "For Her Majesty's Church of the Mohawks, 1712." Some of the signatures
on the flyleaf include:
• Albert Edward (King Edward) Prince of Wales, Sept. 14, 1860
• Arthur (Duke of Connaught) October 1st, 1869

The Coat-of-Arms
The Hanoverian coat-of-arms in the Mohawk Chapel was carved in solid oak and given by King George 111 (1738-
1820), King of Great Britain and Ireland (1760-1820), Elector of Hanover (17601816), and by decision of the
Congress of Vienna, King of Hannover (1815-1820), grandson of George 11, King of Great Britain.
Mr. Tom Cheevers, a researcher of Heraldry, explained the Coat-Of-Arms of George III until 1801, in the
following description:
"Quarterly, 1st, England, impaling Scotland; 2nd, France Modern; third, Ireland; 4th, gu., two lions passant
guardant in pale or, (for Brunswick), impaling or, semee of hearts gu., a lion rampant azure, (for Luneberg),

The following description of the historical windows of the Mohawk Chapel is taken from the book entitled “A
Glimpse of the Past”. A Centennial History of Brantford and Brant County, 1966, Brant
Historical Society, 166 Pages 4-5

1
#1 – The founding of the Five Nations (later six) Confederacy by Hiawatha, speaker for Deganawidah, lover of
human life, the first League of Nations. The Pine tree provided the symbol of peace.
#2 – Her Majesty Queen Anne receive four Indian sachems or chiefs bearing gifts of belts of wampum. Interpreter,
Col. Peter Schuyler, asks for a clergyman to build an Indian church. The famous Queen Anne Silver and Bible
inscribed and given by the Queen in 1712 is still in use at the Royal Chapel.
#3 – Captain Joseph Brant, Thayendanegea, the principal war Chief of the Six Nations, is shown leading his people
away from the tragedies of the American Revolution to the Grand River. By Sir Frederick Haldimand’s
Proclamation of October 25, 1784, 570,000 acres of land, six miles deep on each side of the Grand River, recently
purchased by the crown from the Mississaugas, was given to “His Majesty’s faithful allies” forever.
#4 – Joseph Brant brought the Rev. John Stuart, United Empire Loyalist, to dedicate Mohawk Chapel. This window
is from a sketch by Lady Simcoe (the Governor’s wife) showing the Chapel built in 1785, and Brant’s home, the
Council house can be seen with the British flag above.

#5 – Through this window we are reminded of the love of God and its outreach to all men. The New
England Company began Indian missionary work at Brantford in 1827. They spent one million dollars in
religious and educational work and founded the Mohawk Institute, a day school and Parsonage. Rt. Rev.
Charles J. Stewart, Bishop of Quebec, is consecrating the only Indian Royal Chapel in the world.
#6 – The Queen’s window, with the royal cipher by permission of Elizabeth II, depicts Gospels printed in
Mohawk being distributing from the sanctuary steps. The St. John’s Gospel was the first non-English
translation done by the Foreign Bible Society in 1806. Over the altar are the Apostle’s Creed. Ten
Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer in Mohawk, placed in the Chapel in 1788.
#7 – John Brant (Joseph Brant’s son) realized the importance of education and Christian training in
morals and urged the building of the first Indian boarding school near the Chapel in 1831. We see Miss
Susan Hardy, a former pupil and teacher for fifty years, surrounded by her students in front of the old
Mohawk Institute.
#8 – The ascended Christ is pictured with the cross in the background and the outline of the heavenly
tepee or home. Offerings of the good earth and wampum are made by the Indians. A trillium is seen at
the top, representing the trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. “The house of the Lord shall be established
and all nations shall flow into it”—Text at base of window.
The windows of the chapel were designed by David Edion Mitson of Dundas, formerly of Simcoe, Ontario. He
started designing in 1956. Windows were made by English artist Michael Bell.

The Mohawk Chapel Cemetery is located on Mohawk Road, south of Birkett’s Lane, next to the Mohawk Chapel, which is the
first Protestant Church in Ontario and the only Royal Chapel outside of the British Isles. Built with a King’s favour and by his
personal grant as an expression of gratitude for Indian loyalty to the Crown at the time of the American Revolution.
Built in 1785 as the result of a visit of Chief Joseph Brant to the Court of St. James when he made it known to George
III that the Indians maintaining their allegiance to the British and moved from the Mohawk Valley in New York State “to the land
six miles wide on either side of the Grand” and were in need of a school, church and grist mill.
A map of the cemetery is included and the stones are numbered on the map and also information taken from the
registers of the Church by Alma Luard in 1964. The records from 1841-1878 were lost in fire in 1902. The records of the
Mohawk date from 1827.
