Análise Textual
A new study reveals that Americans are spending record amounts on treatments for their
aching backs. But are these expensive fixes a waste of money?
After what seemed like a minor fall, Bruce Wilson began having back pain. That was 25
years ago. Since then the former manufacturing executive, now 60, has had seven
operations—at a cost to insurance companies of $278,000. Yet Wilson's back still hurts, and
he spends hundreds of dollars a month on pain relievers and other medications.
Now a surgery vet, Wilson has some hard-won advice for other sufferers: "I'd tell young
people with back problems that they should try the nonsurgical avenues first." When
doctors recommend an operation, says the Seattle resident, "we're all too quick to agree.
As a society, we all want instant gratification or instant relief."
Despite a growing array of sophisticated drugs, diagnostics, physical therapies, and surgical
techniques, the millions of Americans battling back pain may not be any closer to getting
that quick relief than they were 20 years ago. Several recent studies indicate that even with
the latest in high-tech medical intervention, effective treatments for back problems
remain elusive. And in any case, the price tag is staggering.
Análise do Texto
Manufacturing = fabricando (verbo no gerúndio). Ele está ao lado do substantivo “executive” (executivo)
então para montar a tradução do grupo nominal traduzimos primeiro “the former” (o antigo) executivo de
produção.
Observe que o verbo no gerúndio virou o adjetivo da palavra executivo.
6. sufferers - Substantivo originado do verbo to suffer. (Sofrer). Com o sufixo ER fica a pessoa que sofre
= sofredores.
Observação: “d” também pode ser a abreviatura do verbo had. Ex: He´d studied a lot (studied está no
particípio passado). Ele tinha estudado muito.
Portanto se tiver a abreviatura “d” você deverá olhar se o verbo após está no infinitivo ou no particípio
passado. Se o verbo estiver no particípio passado o “d” será had, se o verbo estiver no infinitivo o “d” será
would.
In 1989, the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre came up with a radical solution to its major
problems of unaccountability and extreme poverty: a participative budget. For the last
decade, the people of the city have been deciding how the budget for public works should
be allocated. Neighbourhood groups propose projects, and people from community groups
and non-profit organizations who have been elected by their neighbours, decide which
projects will go ahead. In some cases, the community delegates also oversee
implementation of the final projects. This has had the triple result of avoiding corruption
and mishandling funds, improving concrete matters on the ground, and increasing
democratic participation in the process by a huge amount.
a. globalized.
b. conservative.
c. innovative.
d. traditional.
e. governmental.

Análise do Texto
Este é um verbo frasal seguido de uma partícula adverbial “up” e da preposição “with”.
Você deve procurar no dicionário a palavra “came” e dentro do verbo no infinitivo “to
come”, você deve procurar diferentes traduções, você deve escolher a que melhor se
encaixa no texto.
No dicionário você tem: Come up with sth: esse “sth” significa “alguma coisa” você pode
palavra. Então unaccountability = irresponsabilidade
