WHAT IS A RESEARCH
OBJECTIVE?
Research objectives describe what
you intend your research project to
accomplish.

They summarize the approach and

purpose of the project and help to
focus your research. Your
objectives should appear in the
introduction of your research
paper, at the end of your problem
statement.
A distinction is often made between research
objectives and research aims.

RESEARCH AIM

To examine contributory factors to muscle

retention in a group of elderly people.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
To assess the relationship between sedentary habits and muscle atrophy among the
participants.

To determine the impact of dietary factors, particularly protein consumption, on the

muscular health of the participants.

To determine the effect of physical activity on the participants’ muscular health.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
Well-defined objectives of research are an essential component of
successful research engagement. If you want to drive all aspects of your
research methodology such as data collection, design, analysis and
recommendation, you need to lay down the objectives of research
methodology. In other words, the objectives of research should address
the underlying purpose of investigation and analysis. It should outline the
steps you’d take to achieve desirable outcomes. Research objectives help
you stay focused and adjust your expectations as you progress.

The objectives of research should be closely related to the problem

statement, giving way to specific and achievable goals. Here are the types
of research objectives for you to explore:
GENERAL
OBJECTIVES
are broad goals to be
achieved

SPECIFIC
OBJECTIVES
are short term and narrow in
focus
GENERAL
OBJECTIVE

Also known as secondary objectives, general objectives

provide a detailed view of the aim of a study. In other words,
you get a general overview of what you want to achieve by
the end of your study.

EXAMPLE:

If you want to study an organization’s contribution to

environmental sustainability, your general objective could
be: a study of sustainable practices and the use of
renewable energy by the organization.
SPECIFIC
OBJECTIVE

Define the primary aim of the study.

Typically, general objectives provide the foundation for

identifying specific objectives. In other words, when general
objectives are broken down into smaller and logically
connected objectives, they’re known as specific objectives.

They help define the who, what, why, when and how aspects
of your project. Once you identify the main objective of
research, it’s easier to develop and pursue a plan of action.
EXAMPLES OF GENERAL & SPECIFIC
OBJECTIVES
RESEARCH STATEMENT:
"Effectiveness of planned teaching on the
knowledge of staff nurses working in psychiatric
unit regarding Physical Restraints for psychiatric
patient in selected hospital of Vidharbha region".

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
To asses the knowledge of staff nurses working in psychiatric unit
regarding physical restraint. Specific objective: To assess the knowledge
regarding Physical Restraints among nurses working in psychiatric unit.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
To assess the knowledge regarding Physical Restraints among nurses working in
psychiatric unit.
To evaluate the effect of planned teaching on Physical Restraints among nurses.
To associate the knowledge with selected demographic variables
1 Define the focus of your study.

2 Clearly identify variables to be measured.

3 Indicate the various steps to be involved.

4 Establish the limits of the study.

Avoid collection of any data that is not strictly

5 necessary.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES ARE
IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY:

Establish the scope and depth of your project: This

helps you avoid unnecessary research. It also means that
your research methods and conclusions can easily be
evaluated.

Contribute to your research design: When you know what

your objectives are, you have a clearer idea of what
methods are most appropriate for your research.

Indicate how your project will contribute to extant

research: They allow you to display your knowledge of
up-to-date research, employ or build on current research
methods, and attempt to contribute to recent debates.
