1926
Father and grandfather were
preachers, grew up around gospel
Learned clarinet first, but
inspired by Charlie Parker and
Duke Ellington he picked up sax
Joined the Philadelphia bebop
scene in 1946 after the war

Originally a bebop artist,


Coltrane later became a
pioneer of the FREE JAZZ
Top Albums movement.
