CONTENT AND CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS:

MODULE 5: KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN

Theory: The Katipunan Code of Conduct is completely Gender-Bias

Supporting Evidences:
➢ Shows gender inequality; men are said to have helped women navigate their issues.
This kind of comment will therefore somehow be useless if you use it at these times.
It's because women can now stand up by themselves in today's society. These days,
women can hold strong positions and lead.
➢ The equivalent translation of Kartilya ng Katipunan into foreign language is equated
to a man; for instance, the 6th code stated that, “To the honorable man, his word is
sacred. As if only the one who fought and who loved the motherland were only the
men. In addition, the 9th code “The prudent man is sparing in words and faithful in
keeping secrets.” also, distinguishes the huge gap between the gender. Sentence seeks
to proceed from the social realities of the period as premised, that men and women
were far from equal during the time of the Katipunan, and then delivers what is
obviously the main point about responsibility of leadership. If the point that the men
lead were the main point, a prescription, we would not have been able to do anything
about it, and we would have propagated the Kartilya as a document which is good
despite some serious flaws.
➢ Although the codes may have mentioned hether our skin be black or white, we are all
born equal: superiority in knowledge, wealth and beauty are to be understood, but not
superiority by nature. Never mention whether be man or a woman. We see the
obvious intention of the Katipunan leaders in coming out with an unequivocal policy
for gender partnership which implies equality. For this reason we dared put in
parenthetical qualifiers:
➢ It is Anti feminist; on the 10th code, “On the thorny path of life, man is the guide of
woman and the children, and if the guide leads to the precipice, those whom he guides
will also go there.”
➢ Going back, our history is male dominated society. We lived in a Patriarchal society
wherein men had a greater role compared to women. Women are conditioned to stay
at their respective houses and serve their husband. HIStory never and never - herstory;
refers to history or historical narratives viewed from the feminist perspective.
➢ In fact, there were Filipino Female warriors that existed prior to the KKK. Gabriela
Cariño de Silang, was a Filipino military leader best known for her role as the female
leader of the Ilocano independence movement from Spain.
➢ KKK regarded women as only secondary in relation to men. Given the fact that it is
written by a man. Basically, the interpretation we have inserted qualifies the relative
weakness of the women as one of physique. Although we recognize that this is not
simplistically true, especially women are known to have a higher threshold of pain
and endurance, the women are generally weaker physically compared to the men.
