Impact on the Built Environment

Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 Page 6

3.1 Definition of the Built Environment:
The built environment refers to the surroundings within which people live, work, and
enjoy leisure activities. In addition to buildings and parks, it includes supporting
infrastructure, such as transport, water, and energy networks (Built environment, 2023).
Through its use of land, water, and energy resources, as well as the waste and
emissions it produces, over the years it’s been noticed the built environment as a by-
product reduce the quality of the natural environment. In contrast, extreme weather
events such as floods, cyclones, bushfires, and heatwaves are regarded as one of
the greatest threats to the built environment and to its inhabitants (Built environment and
health, 2023).

e.g., of Built environment:

3.3 Positive impacts:

Olkituoto Nuclear Power Plant impact on the existing built environment is predominantly
associated with its economic/technological impacts, which include:
-  Providing Finland with a steady flow of cash is a result of the nuclear power plant's
energy output and revenue.
- Employed around 4,500 people. As well as providing employment in Finland, the
project’s subcontracting offers opportunities abroad.
- Greatly increasing Finland's electrical self-sufficiency and aids in achieving carbon
neutrality targets.
Olkituoto nuclear power plant extension has been evaluated as a positive project despite
its minor impact on the environment due to technological advancements and revenue
generated by the project.

3.4 Negative Impacts

Olkituoto Nuclear Power Plant impact on the existing built environment is predominantly
associated with its social impacts, which include:
- The impacts of construction on soil, bedrock, and groundwater alterations
- residents’ welfare and noise levels
- traffic impacts during the operation of the newly installed plant unit on
- land use, structures, and landscape Proceedings of the International Youth Nuclear
Congress
- employment and industries
As part of the evaluation of the current negative impacts of the Olkituoto nuclear power
plant extension project, it has been acknowledged that there were construction delays
and problems during the early stages.

3.6 Positive Impacts:

A further reactor is planned, to take the nuclear contribution to about 60% of
electricity and replace coal:
-This long-term plan will generate profit, job opportunities and growth into now
sustainable renewable energy sources to provide electricity to major areas of
Finland. This will have a globalized impact as many other countries will try to
replicate this environment conscious method of producing electricity.

3.7 Negative impacts:

Olkituoto Nuclear Power Plant impact on the future built environment is primarily
associated with its environmental impacts, which include:
- The impacts of construction on soil, bedrock, and groundwater alterations
- vegetation, animals, and objects of protection
- air quality and climate
- land use, structures, and landscape Proceedings of the International Youth Nuclear
Congress
- waters, water fauna and fishing

3.8 Other Considerations:

The impacts of waste and by-products and their treatment, the impacts of traffic on
the environment, the impact of exceptional and accident situations, the impacts of
decommissioning the power plant unit, the impacts of nuclear fuel production and
transportation, and the impacts of associated projects must also be considered (Rohrer
et al., Olkiluoto - A case study for what can go wrong with nuclear power plant, 2019).

In saying this, the impact of this Olkituoto nuclear power plant is quite minor in
comparison to the rest of the world, which makes it an exceptional and significant
achievement. Accordingly, the nuclear power plant's profit and energy output far
outweigh its minor impacts.
(Not really consideration part but thought it might be used somewhere else)
