Silly Frenchie Hat

by Angela Shaver

This isn’t really a pattern, but more of a guideline for making this hat.

Stitches used
MC Magic Circle
SS Slip Stitch
CH chain
SC Single Crochet
DC Double Crochet
DCFP Double Crochet in the front post
DCBP double Crochet in the back post
CR Crab Stitch

You can use any yarn and hook. I used a hook that was a bit small for the yarn. It makes the ears stand
up better.

Ears

MC
6sc in MC, pull closed.
This section is worked in a spiral with no joins
2sc in the next stitch, 2sc, repeat (8 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 3sc, repeat (10 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 4sc, repeat (12 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 5sc, repeat (14 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 6sc, repeat (16 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 7sc, repeat (18 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 8sc, repeat (20 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 9sc, repeat (22 stitches)
2sc in the next stitch, 10sc, repeat (24 stitches)
sc in each stitch around (24 stitches) I repeated this row 5 times for a total of 120 stitches. If your dog’s
ears are longer or shorter, adjust accordingly.
SS in the last stitch. Cut yarn and weave in end.

Make a second ear cone, but do not tie off.

Top of hat

Using the second cone, sc in the next 9 stitches, ch 1, turn

SC in each stitch across (9stitches), ch1, turn. Repeat for about 2 inches.
To size this section, I placed the cones on my dog’s ears and measured the space in between.
Once you have a long enough strip, SS to the first cone.
SC around the cone, in the side of each SC in the top strip, around the next cone, and in each SC of the
other side of the head strap ending at the end of the SS. Repeat this row one time. Tie off and cut yarn.

Chin Strap
Attach yarn on one of the ear cones about 5 or so stitches away from the last tie off. 9sc, chain and turn
Repeat until strap is long enough to go under the chin. SS to the other cone in about the same place. SC
around hole. Where the chin strap joins the ears, I single crocheted 2 together to give it a little shape
around the face.
Then do one row of SC
Next row is one row of crab stitch. If you don’t do crab stitch, SC will work fine.
SS to join cut yarn.
Neck Ribbing

Attach yarn on the other side of the hat.

CH 2, DC around. Try to get an even number. If not, just fudge it. Dogs don’t care. SS to join.
CH 2, FPDC, BPDC ,repeat to the end of the row. SS to join.
CH 2, FPDC in the first FPDC, BPDC in the next BPDC, repeat around. SS to join.
Repeat last row
CH 1, SC around, SS to join
Ch 1 CR around or SC if you don’t do crab stitch. SS to join. Tie off and cut yarn.

Weave in ends

Ear tufts
Cut 6 pieces of yarn about 5 or so inches long. Fold in half.
Insert a smaller hook in the first row and out through the center of the MC. Pull loop thru.
Put ends of yarn thru the loop and pull tight (Lark’s head knot)
Repeat on the other ear cone.

Put it on your pup 
