DLC Number and Statement: 5. represents real-life situations using rational functions
Topic: Rational Functions in Real-life Situations
Value to be Integrated: Economic Dimension - Economic Equity
Value Concept: The value of economic equity talks about the fairness and distribution of economic wealth,
tax liability, resources, and assets in a society. While the topic "rational function" is about the division of
polynomials among other polynomials. The said topic can be put in the context of just distribution of economic
resources.

III. PROCEDURES
B. MOTIVATIONAL Direction: The teacher will group the students into two and read some scenarios
ACTIVITY - that should be followed by the students. The answers must be written on the
ENTRY POINT whiteboard provided by the teacher.
FOR VTI
Acting as if the two groups are different barangays – Barangay A and Barangay
B.
Scene 1:
1. The two local barangay received a budget of PHP 100,000.00 to
provide financial assistance for each household in the barangay. The
amount is to be allotted equally among all the households in the
barangay.
2. Suppose that there are 30 households in Barangay A and 40 households
in Barangay B.
3. How much does each household in Barangay A and B shall receive?
Scene 2:
1. One morning both of the barangay captains decided to add PHP 750.00
for those households belonging to the low-income class.
2. Suppose that there are two households in each barangay that belong to
the low-income class.
3. How much does the two low income households and the rest of the
household shall receive?
Processing questions:
1. What are the scenarios all about? -C
2. What can you say about the manner of distribution? Do you agree, why
or why not? - A
3. Do you think the manner of financial assistance distribution is
happening in real-life? Explain. - A
4. If you were one of the LGU officials, would you do the same manner
of distribution? -A
5. Is mathematical function important in real life situations? Why or what
not? -B
EXAMPLE 2.
a. The local barangay received a budget of PHP 500,000 to provide
medical checkups for the children in the barangay. The amount is to be
allocated equally among all the children in the barangay. Write an
equation representing the relationship of the allocated amount per child
(y-variable) versus the total number of children (x-variable).
500,000
Function: y = –––––––
x
Allocated amount, y
500,000
Function: g(x) = ––––––– + 800

Allocated amount, y
E. PRACTICE Direction: The teacher will read a story to the class and the students must solve
EXERCISES real-life situations using rational functions.
Developing mastery
of the lesson. “Field Trip with Miss Heaven”
It was the month of march and High School And Senior High school students
in Pasay City West High School had their annual field trip.
Complete and evaluate the function in x = 15, 20, 25, 30, 35. Complete the
table to determine how much each student must pay to cover the expenses.
Function:
?
y = ———
x
No. of students, x 15 20 25 30 35
After settling all the fees needed, they started to travel to their destination.
School buses arrived at Manila Zoo on time and they have learned that they
have to pay for a tour guide’s service and each student must pay PHP 10.00
each.
If g(x) represents this new amount shared per student, complete and evaluate
the function in x = 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and use the table below to show how much
in total a student should pay.
Function:
20,000
g(x) = ——— + ?
x
No. of students, x 15 20 25 30 35
Miss Heaven received further information that the trip must include student-
facilitators. She decides that ten (10) students will serve as student-facilitators,
and the student-facilitators will not be required to pay for their trip. The
expenses of the student-facilitators will be covered by the other students.
Complete the function and the table below to see the final cost per student.
Function:
20,000 + 10x
y = ——————
x -?
No. of students, x 15 20 25 30 35
“See you on our next trip!” Miss Heaven said as she waved goodbye.

The fixed costs of camping in Mt. Makiling — which tents, staff salaries,
staff meals, and all equipment — are PHP 10,000.00. There is an additional
cost of PHP 50.00 per camper for food. Because some campers might not be
able to afford the camp, 10 campers will be allowed to attend for free. Write
an equation that expresses the cost per paying camper (y) in terms of the total
number of campers (x).
Answer:
10,000+50x
y= ——————
x - 10
H. ASSIGNMENT Direction: The students will research the standard amount of government
Additional activities subsidy or ayuda and its amount per household during the pandemic. Using
for application or rational-function, how much each household member will receive?
remediation.
No. of Family Member per 3 5 7 10 13 15 18
