MECHANINICAL POWER TRANSMISSION

SIMPLE SCREWS AND POWER SCREWS TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

1. An electric motor driven power screw in a machine turns the nut in a

horizontal plane against a force of 75KN at a speed of 300mm/min. The
screw has a single threaded thread of 6mm pitch on a major diameter of
40mm. The coefficient of friction between screw and nut thread being
0.1. Determine the power required to turn the nut. (1.08KW).

2. A vertical screw with single start threads of 50mm mean diameter and
12.5mm pitch is raised against a load of 10KN by means of a hand wheel
the boss of which is threaded to act as the screw nut. If the coefficient of
friction between the screw and nut threads is 0.15 and the tangential
force that can be applied by each hand is 100N, find the minimum
suitable diameter of the hand wheel. (582mm)

3. A vertical two start threaded screw of mean diameter 100mm and

20mm pitch supports a vertical load of 18Kn. Find the force required at
the end of a lever 400mm long in order to lift and lower the load if the
coefficient of friction between screw and nut threads is 0.15. (635N,
50.8N).

4. The lead screw of a lathe machine has square threads of 24mm outside
diameter and 5mm pitch. In order to drive the tool carriage, the screw is
required to exert an axial force of 2.5KN. Find the efficiency and the
power required to drive the screw if it rotates at 30rpm. Neglect the
bearing friction and take the coefficient of friction between screw and
nut threads as being 0.2. (37.76%, 16.55W)
5. A simple screw jack with threads of pitch 8mm, mean diameter of 40mm
and coefficient of friction 0.1 is to carry a load of20KW. Assuming the
load rotates with the screw determine the ratio of the torques required
to raise and lower the load and the efficiency of the screw. (4.56, 38.6%)

6. A simple screw jack is used is used to raise a load of 5tons. The pitch of
the single start square thread used for the screw is 24mm and the mean
diameter is 74mm. determine the load to be applied at the end of a
1.2m long handle and the efficiency of the screw if the coefficient of
friction between the nut and screw threads is 0.2. (552.2N, 33.9%)
