Activity 1

The novel presents contrast in characterization, setting, and plots among others which
all suggest the concept of discrimination in the kind of system that the Americans follow
during the period of slavery. Discuss the symbolisms of these contrasts.

A. Character Contrast
1. Mr. Shelbey and Mr. Haley
Mr. Shelby, Stowe make use of Mr. Shelby as to show how the slavery have a
underlying immorality makes all of its practitioners villains. Stowe make use of Mr.
Shelby because of its intelligent, kind and a good hearted man.
Mr. Haley is such a impolite person but he introduces himself as kindly caring for
slaves. When the truth is that he does not treat slaves well and he mistreats them.

2. Augustine St. Clare and Simon Legree


Augustine St. Clare, he does not believe in god and he spends his days in binge-
drinking, Augustine St. Clare is a hostile but charming one who lives in pleasure.
Simon Legree is a savage, loathsome and inhuman, who is violent towards the
slaves

3. George Shelbey and Simon Legree


George Shelby is the son of Mr. Shelby who was the same as his father who
was a good hearted man.
Simon Legree is a inhuman one and Tom's brutal bad master.

4. Mrs. Shelbey and Mrs. St. Clare


Mrs. Shelby is a loving wife, caring woman, morally virtuous and an
intelligent woman. He cares for slaves because it does not believe in slavery.
She uses her influence with her husband Mr. Shelby to support Shelby’s slaves.
Mrs. St. Clare is the opposite of Mrs. Shelby, she only cares about herself.

B. Setting Contrast
1. Tom’s travel to South and Eliza’s travel to North
North is used to present the autonomous while South is used to present slavery
and injustice in the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Because of Uncle Tom it widened the
gap between North and South, many Northerners understood how unfair slavery
was. While in the South the owners of the slaves fought ever harder to protect anti
slavery.
Eliza and her husband flew to the North from the South in search of pleasure
and autonomous. While Tom traveled to the South from the North to seek

martyrdom and death. After all the travel of Tom and Eliza they were both happy
with the path they took, Eliza was supported by kind people in their area, while Tom
had a kind master, he was happy with his new surroundings even though he is far
from his family.

C. Plot Contrast
1. Slave narrative and Escape Narrative
Slave narrative is about the hardships, struggles and the capability of the slaves. It
is mostly written by the one who has experienced the hardships of being a slave. It was
written by those who experienced slaves to declare their hardships and their freedom.
While escape narrative it contains idealized characters that can be easily identified as
good or bad.
