the gas.

Answer any two questions in this section.

18 (a) (i) Write an expression for work done by variable force, F. Define all the symbols
in your expression [2 marks]
(ii) A body of mass 5.0 kg, initially at rest, is acted by a force
𝐹 = (6 − 𝑡)2 N, where 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 6 seconds. Find the speed of the body after
6.0 seconds

(b) Calculate the coefficient of dynamic friction and the velocity of the block when a

the force constant of the spring is 1000Nm-1

(c) An object of mass 80kg slides a distance of 100m down a plane inclined at angle
30o to the horizontal. The frictional force opposing the motion of the object is 40 N.
At the end of the motion, calculate

(i) the lost of gravitational potential energy [2 marks]


(ii) the final kinetic energy of the object [3 marks]

19 (a) A copper wire and fibreglass of the same dimensions are each suspended from a
retort stand. Each of them is then slowly stretched by adding loads to their free ends
until they break.

(i) On the same axes, sketch graphs of stress against strain to show the two
materials. [2 marks]

(ii) From your graphs in (a)(i), state three different characteristics of the
materials. [3 marks]

(b) A copper wire with initial length of 0.755 m and cross-sectional area of
3.75 x 10-7 m2 is stretched until the strain in the wire is 0.015.
[Young Modulus of copper is 1.30 x 1011 Pa.]

(i) Calculate the force applied. [3 marks]


(ii) Calculate the strain energy in the wire. [3 marks]
(iii) If the cross-sectional area of the wire changes but the volume remains the
same, determine the fractional change in cross-sectional area of the wire.

20 (a) (i) What is meant by the degree of freedom of a gas molecule ? [1 mark]
(ii)Explain why the number of the degrees of freedom of a diatomic gas
molecule is different at temperatures 30 K, 300 K and 3000 K.

(b) (i) State the law of equipartition of energy [1 mark]
(ii) A molecule of an ideal gas has f degrees of freedom. By using the law of
equipartition of energy, deduce an expression for internal energy U of n
moles of the ideal gas [3 marks]
(iii) If the pressure of the ideal gas is p, and its volume is V, deduce an expression
for internal energy U of the gas in terms of f, p and V [2 marks]

(c) A container of volume 2.00 x 10-3 contains 8.00 g of helium gas at pressure 1.01 x
105 Pa.
(i) What is the internal energy of the gas ? [2 marks]
(ii) What is the mean kinetic energy of one molecule of helium gas ? [3 marks]
