BRIEF INTRODUCTION
• Street dance, also more formally described as vernacular dance, originated in New York
in the 1970s. Evolving on the streets of Manhattan and the Bronx, it was developed as an
improvised, social dance form, reacting against traditional, high-art dance styles.
Popular with African-Americans and Puerto-Ricans. Street dance, also informally referred
to as street, is an umbrella term that encompasses a range of dance styles characterized
by descriptions such as hip hop, funk, and breakdancing. Its eclectic nature has
spawned a whole new street dance lexicon, including terms such

as popping, locking, waving, and krumping. (by Kerry Maxwell, author of Brave New
Words)

STREETDANCE STYLES
B-BOYING -B-boying or breaking, also called breakdancing, is a style of street dance and the first hip-
hop dance style that originated among Black and Puerto Rican youths in New York City during the early
1970s. A practitioner of this dance is called as b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. Although the term breakdance
is frequently used to refer to the dance, b-boying, and breaking are the original terms. (DepEd LM in PE,

CRIP WALKING
(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TT16OTNPyEk Note: You may try this at home. Observe precautionary measures)
Crip-walking was popularized by the infamous rivalry between the Bloods and Crips
gangs. Crips members are known to execute this move after killing a rival, thus capping
off the kill with their signature. Nowadays, Crip-walking has gone beyond its violent origins
and is now often part of every hip hop dancer’s repertoire of moves. Snoop Dogg and
Xzibit are known to have shown these in their songs’ music videos, “Drop it like it’s Hot”
and “Get your Walk On,” respectively.

ROBOT/MANNEQUIN
(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BkfDjRwBaaQ Note: You may try this at home. Observe precautionary measures)

Robotting or Mannequin dance is pretty much similar to popping, but still, many dancers
use robot or mannequin dance moves as their primary style. Robot or Mannequin dance
is simply acting like a robot or mannequin.
HARLEM SHAKE
(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdeu5aGwwWI Note: You may try this at home. Observe precautionary measures)
Harlem shake originally came from the 80s. The shake’s origins are said to be from an
East African dance called Eskista, but dancers most often compare the Harlem shake to
drunken dance.
JERKING
(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_VAnpZ3MRB0 Note: Please DON’T try this at home)
The jerkin is a fairly recent hip hop dance trend. It involves twitchy dance moves called
‘jerks’ wherein the performer executes a set of leg stretches in and out.

The Dougie hip-hop dance is generally performed by moving one's body in
a shimmy style and passing a hand through or near the hair on one's head. The dance
originated in Dallas, Texas, where it took its name from similar moves performed by 1980s
rapper Doug E. Fresh.

Dance is a recreational activity that can develop our physical, mental, social, and
emotional health. Dancing as part of our lifestyle can indeed sustain our fitness. But it
should be coupled with proper eating habits and weight management for a person to
live a healthy life. One example of this is Street dance, an improvised social dance that
is usually taught together under street dance classes. In this module, you will be watching
2
and performing a typical street dance using a video you created in your previous lesson.
The activities are provided to better understand and appreciate the lesson by applying
the different typical street dance. Among the common street, dance is usually cover a
variety of moves from hip-hop, house, locking, popping and break dancing which is called
b-boying.
Harlem Shake is a jerky arm and shoulder movement just in time to the music. The dance
was introduced to the mainstream in 2001 when it featured heavily in G. Dep's music video
for the song "Let's Get It". The dance was created by Al B. (whose legal name was Albert
Leopold Boyce) in 1981. He was known for performing it during breaks at the Entertainer's
Basketball Classic basketball tournament at Rucker Park. The dance was first called "The
Albee" after its creator and later became known at the Harlem Shake when it became
popular outside of the neighborhood.
The dance was then popularized by four-man dance crew Crazy Boyz (members Maurice
"Motion" Strayhorn, Jesse "Smiley" Rutland, Kirkland "Dirty Kirt" Young and Joseph "No Bones"
Collins). According to Al. B. the dance came from the ancient Egyptians and describes it as
what the mummies used to do. Because they were all wrapped up, they couldn't really
move, all they could do was shake.
Jerkin' or Jerk is a style of hip-hop dance originally popularized in the late 2000s. It started in
Los Angeles and quickly spread globally through viral Internet videos. The dance itself
consists of moving your legs in and out called the "jerk", and doing other moves such as
bouncy, loose, and "jerky" movements.
Recreation is a therapeutic refreshment or relaxation of one’s body and mind. Activities
done for this purpose are called recreational activities. Its main objective is to revitalize the
physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects of a person.
Dance is a recreational activity that can develop our physical, mental, social, and emotional
health. Dancing as part of our lifestyle can surely sustain our fitness. But it should be coupled
with proper eating habits and weight management in order for a person to live a healthy
life. Another form of dance is known as Street dance and it refers to a dance styles that have
evolved outside of dance studios. It is performed in streets, dance parties, parks, school
yards, or in any available space. It is often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging
interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers.
Hip-hop dance, on the other hand, refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-
hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. Hip-hop music incorporates a
number of iconic elements, most notably DJing and rapping, along with things like beat
boxing, sampling, and juggling beats on turntables.

Street dancing became extremely popular in the 1980s, and notable b-boys, girls, and
dance groups began to perform in various venues, including Broadway theatre,
performing arts ceremonies, and film. The mainstream U.S. Population was familiar with
a stripped-down idea of what street dancing was. However, during the 1990s, hip-hop
groups in the United States and sprouting groups in other countries sought to bring the
style back to its roots. There was an increase in hip-hop groups that merged the dance
with theatre, contemporary dance, spoken word, and other performance art forms. In
the early 20th century, the top most iconic hip-hop dance styles are as follows: B-boying
