Student intern: Liam Jones Date of observation: 2/6/23 Observation #: 1

Mentor teacher: Carrie Marsh School: Mays Chapel Elementary
Time of observation: 9:25-10:20am Approx. # of students: 22
Class/rehearsal description and grade(s): 5th Grade General Music

Activity Observed Suggestions, questions, etc.

Welcome Routine Loved the enthusiasm and participation you helped
Smart Starts-- Connect them add! Thank you for maintaining our class routine.
Listening Activity for Connect- connect with the students
on what you envision when you hear the music too!
Consider having prompts for them on the screen to help
them connect.

Objective Add the word “combination” to your objective as it fully

describes the rhythm concept they are focusing on.

This was so fun and engaging! Consider reviewing the

Warm Up: Rhythm Four Corners rhythms they know very quickly with the anchor chart
for note durations! I loved that you had them vote and
clap the rhythm before announcing the correct rhythm.
This was very effective!

Consider using the carpet for a kinesthetic element—

maybe in a later round? Each corner could have a
designated letter. You could also use this for a formative
assessment later with students writing down the answer
either on a white board or exit ticket. I also loved that
you practiced the rhythm syllables. It was scaffolded
well, and all students were successful.
Description of Known Rhythms- 4th Grade Reviewed ties, 16th notes, and beamed 8th and 16th note
Rhythm Review combos utilizing slides. This is a visual and kinesthetic
way to review as students read, said, and clapped the
rhythms

Brain Break and Review: Bim Bam The pacing was great. I loved that you seamlessly moved
into this activity. It was a great change of pace.

Rhythm Decode of Bim Bam During the decode, consider the more challenging
measures like measure two. Have them practice “ta ti-ki

ta-ka ti” a few times on their own and then as a group.

This would also be a great chance for students to write

rhythms for extension.

I love that you connected with them about Bim Bam

Hogs in the Cornfield Singing Game- Remind students of the game we played last week, Fed
Immediate Practice My Horse. Which beamed 8th and 16th note combo did
we see in that game?

Sing the song, then play the game. Don’t worry about
falsetto, as you saw, it changed their timbre. This is
definitely something we can work on and I am certainly
no expert at it. Once they have played the song multiple
times and are comfortable with it, they will sing along.
Consider using a melodic instrument for them to sing
along with. You could use the piano, barred instrument
etc. Recordings of children singing could also work.

You had very strong command over the students. Try to

connect this with a game that they know—like Sharks
and Minnows. The kids love this. You were clear and
concise with the rules.

Behavior Management: I loved your use of descending

scale in 5 4 3 2 1 to grab attention. I loved that you
reminded them that we cannot play the game if we are
talking. I loved that when you realized there were too
many farmers, you reset the game.

Remind students of the commitments and charter they

agreed to if you notice they need that.

Don’t forget to sing the song in between rounds—the

“why”. Perhaps you can use it as a way to get them back
to the other carpet for the next round. Maybe if they
speak during it, they automatically become a farmer.
This will make a smoother transition.
Formative Assessment Don’t forget to have them decode the Hog song—
Wind Down remember the “why”!
Extension The Wind Down song was one of their favorites
Closing Challenge rhythm could be the first phrase of Hogs in
the Cornfield.
Review the expectations of a cup as an instrument.
Utilize the rhythm of the cup song as the extension.
Remember the “why”. What is the why of the cup song?
Use the tutorial or you are the tutorial. I don’t think you
will need both 
Thank you for utilizing the music critic for closing
