Ecosystems: Plant and Animal Interaction

You learned how an ECOSYSTEM is a group of living things that interact with the environment.
The success of an animal depends on how well it uses everything around it.

This success defines an animal’s role, or NICHE.

PRODUCERS CONSUMERS DECOMPOSERS

PRODUCERS – they make their own food, usually by using the sunlight
Ex: Plants

Plants use the sun to make energy. They use some of that energy to grow and they save the
rest of that energy.

CONSUMERS – need to eat other organisms in order to survive (they eat the producers)

INTERACTION: Energy is passed on from one level to the next.

Primary consumers: eat plants  HERBIVORES

Secondary consumers: eat primary consumers – usually meat  CARNIVORES
Consumers that eat both plants and meat  OMNIVORES

You also learned that ANIMAL WASTE  helps to spread seeds

When animals leave behind SCRAPS OF FOOD  this is food for SCAVENGERS
(ex: insects)

DECOMPOSERS
Ex: bacteria, fungi
These use ALL the leftovers and transform them into nutrients that go back to the Environment

With all of this information you discovered we have something called a FOOD CHAIN
FOOD CHAIN
All living things depend on each other to survive.
