ADDITIONAL FACILITY FOR THE PROPOSED PROJECT: METHANE

COLLECTION SYSTEM

An additional feature of this sanitary landfill is a methane collection system

that will remove the landfill gases and generate it into a useful energy. A

series of perforated tubes will be placed into the landfill's depth to collect

gases, which is then piped to the biogas plant in Sacred Heart’s Cooperative

Hog Breeding Farm in order for it to be processed and turn into electricity.

The processed and ready to use gas, electricity, will be then distributed or be

off used in the hog farm itself.

BACKGROUND:

Over the course of a century, methane has 34 times the greenhouse effect of

carbon dioxide. Landfills are a top source of methane emissions, releasing

12 percent of the world’s total. Landfill methane can be tapped, captured,

and used as a fairly clean energy source for generating electricity or heat,

rather than leaking into the air or being dispersed as waste. The climate

benefit is twofold: prevent landfill emissions and displace coal, oil, or natural

gas that might otherwise be used (https://drawdown.org/solutions/landfill-

methane-capture).

A modern sanitary landfill is a complex structure that isolates trash from

the surrounding environment until it becomes inert. Landfills comprise a

bottom liner made from clay and durable synthetic plastic; a leachate

collection system to remove liquids; a stormwater management system that

keeps surface water from flowing into the garbage; and a methane collection

system that removes landfill gas as it is generated.

Nevertheless, LFG can be utilized to make landfills greener. Instead of

burning it, some landfills are converting the LFG they collect into usable

energy. Sometimes the collected gas is used to power boilers or furnaces, or

it can be refined into renewable natural gas. Most often, it is used to

generate electricity (https://earth911.com/business-policy/how-landfills-

work/).
