Exercises 2.3 Paintings

A.   Situate art objects in historical context.

1. What do you know about the period of the painting? Include in the discussion the following:
biographical data of the artist, information about how the painting was received in its time, and
important social, political, and economic constructs of the time.

 Juan Luna is a famous Filipino painter, and his works often represent internal political and
"socio-cultural" perspectives as well as his feelings. Juan Luna's paintings show a broad variety
of creativity and passion for their artworks, which are incredibly detailed and may depict reality.
For instance, he captured both the beauty and the melancholy of Cleopatra's face in his painting
"The Death of Cleopatra." His works are not only magnificent, but they also have a tale.
 Fernando Amorsolo's paintings portray Filipino culture, as shown in one of his works. For
instance, we can observe the traditional farming techniques used in the Philippines in his
painting "The Farmer and His Wife." We can also see the wide variety of clothing the people of
the Philippines are wearing.
 Vicente Manansala's paintings capture the varied Filipino settings and the range of feelings that
may be felt there. For instance, we can observe the numerous sorts of landscapes seen in the
Philippines in his picture "The Mountain and the Sea." We may also see the various emotions
that Filipinos go through.

2. What are the profound qualities in the painting that show the artist's skill in replicating reality?

 A Filipino master painter like Juan Luna's paintings, which portray his inner political and socio-
cultural perspectives as well as his sentiments, exhibit profound qualities such as a vast
imagination, a passion for their work, and the ability to reveal the truth. These paintings also
have other profound features. Moreover, some of the artwork, like Fernando Amorsolo’s
painting, depicts aspects of Filipino culture.

3. What evidence can you provide to support your main claim on the important depiction of the
painting?

 According to the proverb "a picture is worth a thousand words," works of art are usually created
with the intention of being critically analyzed. Paintings can be more complex than they
originally appear and may be more difficult to comprehend if the viewer doesn't understand
them in the same way.
