Organizational behavior is a multidisciplinary concept that seeks to investigate behavior of

individuals working in an organizational setting and it primarily emphasizes on how individuals

communicate and influence others in the group (Jacobs & Manzi, 2019). Organizational behavior
is ultimately aimed towards developing an appropriate model that enables managers and leaders
to enhance organizational productivity via provision of a conduction work environment. It
encompasses various aspects such as motivation, leadership, job satisfaction, employee
engagement, and organizational culture among many. In this reflective essay, I intend to set out
my reflection on the topic relating to organizational behavior and management by using DIEP
framework.

Describe: The most interesting insight that I got from topic 1: organizational behavior and
management is the overview of the concept of organizational behavior and particularly
Hawthorne effect and also the relationship between managerial roles and organizational
behavior. Only did I realize from the lectures and further reading on this topic that organizational
behavior has a lot to do with how one interacts in the organizational setting and that a good
manager or leader is essential.
Interpret: Taking into consideration the differences in individual behaviors in the organization
that is driven by one’s own personality, ethnic background, perception and attitude, and the link
between organizational productivity and human contribution, organizational behavior needs to be
highlighted (Kurdi, Alshuredhi, & Alafaishat, 2020). Even in my previous jobs, I believed that
organizational productivity driven by collective efforts of all the employees and this was
reinforced whilst delving deep into the concept of organizational behavior and management. In
addition, I learned that a manager should possess various skills to steer the team towards success
and it includes technical skills, interpersonal skills, conceptual skill and diagnostic skills…. And
this new insight gave me the opportunity to reflect why some agencies or business entities fail
despite having a highly qualified and technically sound manager or leader.

Furthermore, the lectures as regards one of the exceptional studies on organizational behavior:
Hawthorne effect, which portrays the manner in which employee behavior changes when they
realize they are being observed by their superiors (Rezk, et al., 2021) took me back to the days in
Bhutan, where at one point in time the civil servants were monitored on daily basis by their
employers wherein, they were required to submit daily log of activities. And I realized this
intervention of increasing productivity concurs perfectly with Hawthorne effect.

Evaluate: A significant benefit of understanding organizational behavior is to substantially

improve the organizational performance and its productivity by enhancing employee
performance, job satisfaction and encouraging effective leadership traits. Moreover, it will also
equip me to lead an organization effectively in the future. Moreover, learning the key managerial
skills widened my understanding on the reasons why some managers do exceptionally well while
other derail the organizational efficiency. Lastly, being able to see the effect of monitoring on
employee productivity as Hawthorne observed would be beneficial in changing my paradigm on
constant supervision and monitoring of subordinates.

Plan: I am further encouraged to research and study on the elements of organizational behavior,
its impact on the organization and, the qualities and traits of an ideal manager or leader. I intend
to use the knowledge accrued from such learnings in my professional life to introduce a
competitive edge in the market not just as a mere employee, but as a manager or leader as I climb
up my career ladder.
