Questions for Animal Farm

**Your answers should be in complete sentences. The shortest answers (for question #1, for
example) should be three or four sentences long. A more involved question, like #4, should inspire a
lengthier response with quotations from the text and explanations of those quotations. This does
NOT mean you need to write a novel for each response. Your answers will allow you to participate
in class discussions and can be used for future small and large writing assignments.

Chapter I (One):

1. Describe Mr. Jones. Use at least two details from the chapter to support your description.
2. Mr. Orwell introduces us to several animals who will become important characters as the story
progresses. Describe Old Major, Boxer, Clover, Benjamin and Muriel. For each description
include a quotation from the chapter to support your characterization (description).
3. Describe Old Major’s utopian dream. Specifically, how does he think the farm could become a
utopia? Why does he think that?
4. How does Old Major try to convince others to follow him? Select two DIFFERENT arguments
from his speech.

Vocabulary that may help you with the chapter:

Scullery: kitchen
Comrade: friend
Knacker: butcher
Tyranny: abuse of power, often by a tyrant
