Paedophilia is a crime

The article entitled “Paedophilia as a Form of Sexual Deviance from a Social Bonds Theory”
written by Ermania Widjajanti and Rusmilawati Windari. Article discusses the causal factors
of the paedophilia is a form of sexual deviance by employing the social bonds theory introduced
by Travis Hirschi. Therefore, the authors had stated their insights as how does paedophilia
become a form of sexual deviance in perspective of social bonds theory, mainly based on the
delinquency arises when social ties are weak. Three social bonds that a paedophilia person lack
which lead them to commit sexual crime, those are attachment, commitment, and belief.

Lack of Attachment between the paedophilia with their family, peers and even with the society
will lead them to involved in sexual crimes especially towards children. The concept of
attachment, which refers to sensitivity and interest in others, is used to describe conforming
behaviour. Hirschi (1969) claims that the attachment of an individual to others is the essence
of internalising rules of consciousness. For starters, since a person's level of attachment to
others may be determined independently by his/her deviant behaviour, the explanation of
deviant behaviour based on attachment does not beg the question. According to the control or
bond theories, a person diagnosed with paedophilia is free to engage in delinquent behaviour
because his connections to the people’s perspectives have been torn as if they don’t care about
other’s thought.

A lack of commitment is another way of saying that denying access to a crime reduces the
likelihood of delinquency. Lack of commitment to conservative values may presage a
circumstance in which risk-taking behaviour, such as crime, becomes a viable behavioural
decision. Commitment refers to the time, energy, and effort expended in long - established
actions such as obtaining an education and saving money for the future. If one lack of
commitment, the probability for them to commit crimes are high since they don’t have to worry
about their responsibility towards something. For example, paedophilia mostly single adult
who have no commitment towards their family.
