Welcome to my favourite month! Leaves on trees, fresh and bright hedgerows. Bird song and the cricket season has just started. Not just any old season this year, but a home Ashes series. Please note the pull-out and keep for our own local cricket club. All of us gardeners are busy potting up and planting out, our very own Plant Fair is this weekend when the May Voice is out, so news of how it went in next month's edition. | have had one suggestion for any profit we make (shared with the Church,) but if you have any suggestions for a local charity please let me know. Of course it is King Charles 111 Coronation this month too. It can't be easy following QE11's long reign, especially as he already has a good few miles on the clock and | think, a much more modern approach to the Monarchy. We wish him well, good health and Godspeed. . Whatever you are up to this May, may it be mad, merciful and merry! Gina Next issue to be collected May 26th. Breast feeding should continue. When to see the doctor - Ifa child who is ill refuses to drink - If diarrhoea persists for more than one week - If diarrhoea recurs on restarting milk feeds : Ifa child with diarrhoea or vomiting has a temperature for more} than 24 hours - If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell Sick notes for minor illnesses Doctors do not issue sick notes for illnesses that last up to one week. You should ask your employer for a Self- Certificate form, which your employer is legally obliged to accept. 04 To ALL PARISHIONERS Dear Friends “God save the King” | must admit having been born a few years after our late Queen Elizabeth's Coronation, | find it quite strange having to say King instead of Queen, but from now on our children and grandchildren will only know a King. What a moment in history King Charles III being crowned King of our country, many of us have never seen a Coronation let alone been part of one. In his speech after his mother's death King Charles made a commitment to follow the pattern of loving service that she demonstrated so well in her 70 years as our Queen, a service of loyalty respect and love. Also her deep centred faith which had help her through many difficult times and which she reflected on in her Christmas broadcasts each year. I'm sure King Charles feels the weight of responsibility and lifelong commitment he is making in his promises at his Coronation, and will need our prayers as he sets out on his own lifetime journey as our King. Jesus said “Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” Service is not a word we use lightly when we are talking of serving others, there are many people in our communities who serve others without being recognised, but King Charles will promise to serve his people, he will put his country and people before all other things he will become a servant King Just as Jesus came to be our servant King to the end that he gave his life for all of us. We are still in the season of Easter a time when we celebrate our Risen Lord, and new beginnings. We are entering a new age, a new reign, where | am sure many things will be done differently. King Charles has already put in place many new initiatives and is moving the monarchy forward, and with the support and help of Queen Camilla, The Prince and Princess of Wales and all the family he will undoubtedly put his own stamp on his reign. | am sure that are lots of exciting events planned for the Coronation weekend and whatever way you celebrate | hope you have a lovely time. “Let us look on the past only as it gives us pleasure and to the future with confidence and hope” Joy Smith Licensed Lay Minister 05 ie ete | a 2S eed EVERY FRIDAY Covering Gayton and the surrounding vilages into King's Lynn ‘ADial a Bus service that picks you up and drops you off at your home giving you peace of mind when visiting King's Lynn. Infact 3ofthe friends who organised and set up the event to raise funds for our children no longer have children of their own at the school, so please do get in touch if you want to be a FROG! We are always looking out for extra helping hands. This year in order to gain their prize our older children had to gather the eggs to spell out an easter related word. Luckily they were successful and all went home with their prized eggs! Easter Service The end of term also saw us resume our traditional Easter Service at church. also managed to fit in an open afternoon for parents. The children in reception class had fun in the windy weather playing with the parachute Year 2 became more confident during their computing lessons. Khalo class made use of the warm sunshine to perfect their netball skills. The whole school has also been busy t was wonderful to see our whole school in through our PSHE programme learning church with our families and friends. The children from Van Gogh class retold the Easter Story beautifully and each class sang with such confidence and enthusiasm. It was a wonderful way to end our final week of term. Even some of the parents couldn't help but join in with a final rendition of 'Lord of the dance’! Once again thank you to the FROGS who sold tea, coffee and cakes at the event. A Busy Final Week During the final week before Easter we how to keep safe and healthy. Te point you in the right direction’ 10 Gayton Jubilee Village Hall Despite the non-appearance of the Easter Fayre, and the lack of an event for the Coronation our enquiries for private bookings are as buoyant as ever. The Coffee Mornings and Knit and Natter stroll on majestically, and despite the Warmspace meals and the Food Bank officially ending at the end of March, Sandi has committed to running both of these events twice each week during the month of April, funded by the Hall and donations, and we will re-assess at the May meeting. Once again fantastic work for the village from Sandi. The next monthly meeting at the Hall is Wednesday May 3rd at 6 pm. You are all welcome to attend to find out more. Some of you will visit the Hall on Thursday 4 May to vote !!!, maybe to see the facilities, albeit limited, that we offer. It is with bitter sweet reflections that | have to say that this is my penultimate article for the Voice as | will not be standing for re-election at the AGM on June 7. WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO STEP INTO MY SHOES ASAP. The work that Sandi, Sara and Fiona do has made, and continues to make my life very easy, but my family is growing and | am not spending enough time with them, so please, this is another appeal not to let these people's work be in vain. They need a Chair ASAP - | ‘work’ on average thr to 1/2hrs a week. For more information, please use Messager or call me on 07494143960, or pop in to our ever- enjoyable coffee mornings on Tuesdays between 10 and 12. They would join a Hall that is financially sound and hard working people at Committee level. Over the last week we have had talks with a couple of people who, whilst they would have been ideal for the Chair position, they cannot commit totally, but have offered ad hoc help to Sandi and the team. Otherwise, things are going very well at the Hall with all our usual stuff plus new enquiries such as a Beginners modern line dance class, possibly Monday nights. See page 31 for details They want to dispel the myths of line dance, all done in normal clothing with all types of songs. Fun, social and physical exercise. All good for the soul !!!! They dance to all styles of music such as pop, Latin, country , waltz etc and no partner is required. What do you think of the possibility of a new class at the Hall? Please drop some feedback on our messenger/Facebook site. Keep your eyes peeled for a Bingo — possibly on 27 May — in association with Paws Companion but held and run by our friend of the Hall Ken Rout. Most importantly without some further support the Hall may not even be open in 12 months time so please step forward and be a figurehead for a great bunch of people. While talking to Brenda Watts about Megan's Challenge, she reminded me of the Jogging Grand Prix, organised by Brenda's late husband John, back in 1980. The aim was to jog 5 miles in 1 hour, under the name of The Eastern Triangle. The first one being The Fenland Classic, then The Lighthouse Chase, at Sutton Bridge and lastly, The Gayton Golden Finale Looking through old press cuttings and John's notes, 60 runners took part in 1980 and 149 in1981. It grew so popular that it was moved to Bawsey in1983.In 1985 one of the runners was blind and ran tied to another runner and completed the course. Looking through John's score sheets a few familiar names popped up; Peter, Chrissy Howard, and son Mark and the Leatherland brothers Peter and Paul. John can be seen running in No 13 in the centre. Chrissy Howard running for the British Heart Foundation Don't forget the History Club meets the first Thursday in the month in the Social Club at 7-30. As Chairman for almost a decade, it is my pleasure to serve the club and be a part of a very exciting time for us. A lot of work has taken place over the winter, with our new stand, in memory of Mark Redhead, and the clubhouse is looking the best it has in years. , y - It's been very rewarding to see local businesses P Pin supporting the club with lots of advertising banners and y + ~ matchday sponsorship — a special thanks to Focus t ‘ja Security Ltd for sponsoring the adults team. Our children's Ea teams have been sponsored by The Three Horseshoes, SW Electrical, and Kinsley Store. We are always looking for new sponsors so please get in touch if you feel you can help-out in any way. This will be a huge season for us, our biggest ever, so please join me in getting behind the players and volunteers who are making it all possible! Your support is helping us go from strength-to-strength. Kind regards, Tim Tilbrook. eon: Captains Introduction: It has been my honour to be first team captain at Grimston Cricket Club for over 10 years now and it's fair to say that last season was one of the most dramatic I've experienced. After a slow start to the season, where our batsmen were struggling for form, which saw us knocked out of the cups and sitting middle of the league, we , suddenly found our stride to win our last five matches, y £ __., elevating us to finish third in the league pushing Nth. is Runcton and Bircham all the way. Ja _ + = — Throughout the glorious summer the weather was matched by some equally scintillating cricket, with several matches coming right down to the wire. None more so than the final match of the season, against Bircham CC where Grimston were able to finish off a nervy run chase with only two wickets and a handful of balls remaining. Heading into the 2023 season, Grimston are hoping to go one better than last year's third place and push for promotion to the top tier of Sunday cricket. ® ® Aside from the adult team - 2022 season was huge for Grimston in other areas. We have introduced youth coaching for the first time ever at the club, with All Stars being run for 5-8 year olds and older kids coaching also coming in. We are looking to run the All Stars again this season and also enter teams in the under 9's and under 13's age groups. As a growing club we are always looking for new and returning players to join us - adults practice is on Wednesday evenings 6-8, and all skill levels are welcome. Cricket is a wonderful sport and who can think of a more picturesque setting than Grimston Cricket Ground. | really hope that you will be able to support your team this summer, so please come down and spend a wonderful afternoon relaxing in the sunshine and cheering on your team! Mark Tilbrook. Youth Cricket Message: As youth cricket lead it has been my privilege to oversee the huge growth in our youth cricket offering - there are few sights ™ more satisfying than thirty 5-8 year olds playing cricket for the first time and having fun at our beautiful ground This season is our biggest yet, with All Stars, Youth Cricket AO coaching, and U9 and U13s teams. We are hoping to host at 2 L Whilst at the national level cricket is a sport in decline, at Grimston we are bucking the trend with over 60 kids now involved at the club - so please do bring your children down and get involved! least one youth cricket festival and also the Norfolk Youth Cricket side — none of this would have been possible without the support of our incredible community, there are too many people to mention but thanks to everyone who has helped to make this happen If you have any questions or would like to get in touch, then please do! You will always be welcome, cricket is a sport for everyone, and we have lots of kit for everyone to borrow. The annual highlight of this is the Mark Redhead Memorial Match & Family Fun Day — due to be hosted on 8" July this year. With bouncy castles, stalls, refreshments, and a BBQ, this is the centrepiece of our club's celebrations and is our most important fundraising event — entry is free, and we love to see the whole community come down to enjoy the day in Mark's memory. On the field the battle is between The Legends vs The 2023 Squad, with the club's strongest ever side from the mid 2000's facing off against the current crop of GCC players. Last year was an absolute thriller with the Legends cruising to victory, only to fall at the final hurdle losing 4 wickets in 4 balls — 2023 promises to serve up another fierce contest with The Legends out for revenge! Please do come down and enjoy the day in Mark's memory. For more info - www.grimston.play-cricket.com RURAL MATTERS Spring is heralding Summer and as | write this the rain and chill wind is due to give way to warmer and sunnier weather. This year Spring has been slower than most years and plants have been developing more slowly in the countryside. Bluebells flowering varies with the Spring weather and may be a little later this year. A woodland plant, they flower before the new leaves of the tree canopy block out the sunlight. A great place to see Bluebells is Foxley Wood — from Gayton follow the B1145 towards Bawdeswell, left onto the main road, then right and through Foxley village. It also has a multitude of birdlife in this Ancient Woodland and a varied population of Butterflies. Open everyday except Thursdays, dogs not permitted. With the nesting season started, please keep your dogs on a (short) lead if you are on any of the wildlife reserve areas in West Norfolk. This is due to the number of ‘at risk' and declining species of ground nesting birds such as Skylark, Nightjar. On stony beaches Ringed Plovers, Oystercatchers and Little Terns nest. Usually beaches are roped off to indicate where nesting is — but the chicks don't recognise the rope and can run anywhere and are difficult to seel! Inland, do be aware of Adders; if your dog goes sniffing under gorse or bushes they could get bitten and require veterinary treatment! Just a reminder when you are out and about to keep your arms and legs covered due to Ticks. They can attach to your skin and need to be carefully removed so the whole Tick comes out. There is a risk of Lyme Disease from Tick bites and now it is reported that Tick-born Encephalitis, affecting the brain, has been seen in East Anglia. The Blackthorn and wild Cherry blossom has shown in April and Orchard Blossom Day is celebrated at Gressenhall Rural Life museum on May 1" 10am — 4pm. Lots of rural crafts to see and experience for all the family. A great day out! Apple, Pear, Mulberry, Cherry and Medlar blossoms may be out and there are talks on Bees and honey tastings. With concern over the decline of insects, at the bottom of the food chain, this leads to decline in species upward from Voles and Shrews that feed on insects to birds of prey that feed on small mammals. “No Mow May” has been advocated to allow the dandelions and daisies to grow to give early food to these insects before many other sources are available. We can all do our bit to encourage wildlife by the things we plant in our gardens to encourage Bees and Butterflies as well as other insects. Do listen out for a Cuckoo — they do not stay here long. Other birds will shortly appear, Martins, Swallows and usually later, Swifts will be seen flying around the village. There is plenty to look forward to in the countryside this month! Our Christian Value this term: SERVICE Ours school believes | that service is an essential aspect of living a life based on Christian principles, and they are committed to teaching their students about this value. Throughout the upcoming term, the children in school will be thinking and learning about ‘service’ in many different ways. The pupils will be encouraged to participate in local community projects and engage in acts of kindness that can help to make a positive impact on the lives of others. The school will be exploring the deeper meaning of service and what it means to serve others. The children will be encouraged to reflect on the example set by Jesus Christ, who demonstrated selflessness and compassion through his teachings and actions. As a community, we can all support the school in their efforts to promote the value of service. By encouraging our children to participate in acts of kindness and volunteering in our local community, we can help to instill these values in the next generation. 27 FOR ALL YOUR ACCOUNTING REQUIREMENTS: Call/ email or pop in at our offices at Flitcham Barns for a friendly chat | to discuss your requirements. + Year - end accounts for all small and medium size companies, sole traders, partnerships etc + Rental Property Accounts + Company Tax Returns + Personal Tax Returns + Along with all bookkeeping services es Unit E3 Fitcham Bams inc. Meanwhile, over at Kings Lynn, a pair of Little owls were spotted in a barn but the owl box was occupied by Jackdaw and a Stockdove nested on top of the box. So where was the little owl nesting? There was only one place possible in the metal barn. Closer inspection found 4 eggs- The Little owl nest was on the floor in an old bait box. The chicks did survive even though rats and stoats could have been a problem. The design of the bait box has now been copied and a box will be put up at height in the barn for this years breeding season and also in neighbouring barns to try and increase the population And so from beauties to the beast! His love of birding has brought him into contact with many bird species across the County. In his presentation he is hoping to share some of his more unusual findings whilst giving a panoramic overview of the range of avian species which birders may be fortunate enough to encounter in Norfolk. In his own words: “My experience in birding goes back as far as my childhood, when at the age of ten | nursed an injured Stone Curlew back to health! | am now, according to my grandchildren, an old man of 77! but still have the burning passion for our feathered friends and been fortunate to travel to foreign parts to satisfy my desire for the exotic!!! Therefore, it is my aim to illustrate those birds to any persons that do not wish to endure airports etc., but would still like to see the little and large and the pretty and the plain of our county! | look forward to meeting and showing you what can be seen with some effort.” Please come along. Human bones were revealed! Once the police had come and agreed that there was no ‘bad murder’ to investigate, the peace of the farm returned. In August of that year a Citizen Archaeology Project was organised, with two professional archaeologists giving their free time. The course of the digs since have been covered in a previous article, so | wont go on about it again. It is now time to tell you all that on Tuesday 27th June at Abbey Farm, from 7.00p.m there will be a series off talks from one of the dig archaeologists to let you into the secrets of the Dig to date, and what is planned for the 2023 season this August. There will be some 'stuff to handle too! A metal detectorist will also be present to tell you about their finds, and how to be responsible with a metal detector!
