1. All over the world, weddings are celebrated with a some kind of ceremony.

2. The idea of a wedding ring began with the ancient Hindus. At first, it was not
considered a symbol of love, but was only a sign that a down payment had been made
for the woman and she was no longer available.
3. The ancient Greeks and Romans had the same opinion. And Christian societies
adopted the wedding ring as a sign of fidelity. The wedding ring, this circle
without beginning and end, was also a symbol of eternity. The Scandinavians
preferred to split a gold or silver coin, each partner keeping half.
4. There are also different beliefs about which hand and finger to wear a wedding
ring. People wore a wedding ring on the fourth finger of their left hand, because
they believed that a vein ran directly from this finger to the heart.
5. Today, many brides get married in a white dress, which symbolizes purity. This
tradition originated in the 1500s. Until then, brides wore their best dress, and
color didn't matter. Today in the United States and Great Britain, brides wear
white dresses and follow the tradition of wearing "something old, something new,
something borrowed, something blue." In some cultures, the bride sometimes changes
her dress two or three times on her wedding day.
6. White is not the color that brides wear everywhere. In some countries, brides
wear red, which symbolizes happiness. In many cultures, it is considered
acceptable for the bride and bridesmaids to wear the same color to confuse evil
spirits that may harm the bride.
7. The idea of a wedding cake is common all over the world. At first, the bride
did not eat the wedding cake. It rushed at her! People believed that throwing a
cake at the bride would bring her fertility. Today, many countries have their own
traditional cakes.
8. It is also common to throw things at couples to wish them fertility or
prosperity in different cultures. Today, they often blow soap bubbles or throw
confetti in the shape of hearts and horseshoes.
9. Of course, there are different variations of this tradition in each country.
There is also a tradition of tying shoes to the back of the newlyweds' car.
10. Even in our modern traditions, we still use ancient symbols to show our wishes
for happy and fruitful marriages. Most of these wedding customs around the world
have common features and come from common human values that are based on ancient
traditions and superstitions. They all have the same goal: to celebrate the
wedding and wish the young couple well.
