Activity 3

Rates of Reactions
I. Answer the following questions below.

1. What does rate of reaction mean?

-The reaction rate or reaction rate is the rate at which a chemical reaction
occurs, defined as proportional to the increase in product concentration per unit
time and the decrease in reagent concentration per unit time. Response rates
can vary dramatically.
2. What are the 4 factors that affect the rate of reaction? Explain each.

Reactant concentration- Increasing the concentration of one or more reactors

will often increase the reaction rate. This is because a higher reactor
concentration will result in more collisions of that reactor in a given period of
time.

Physical state of the reactants and surface area- If the reaction molecules
are in different phases as in any other mixture, the reaction rate is limited by
the surface area of the phases in contact.

Temperature - Rise in temperature generally increases the reaction rate. An

increase in temperature increases the average kinetic energy of the reactant
molecules. Therefore, a larger proportion of molecules has the minimum
energy required for efficient collisions.

Presence of a catalyst- Catalysts are substances that do not consume but

participate in and accelerate the reaction. Catalysts represent an alternative
reaction for the extraction of products. They are important for many
biochemical reactions.

I. Solve the given problem.

For the combustion of sucrose: C H O  + 12O  ---> 12CO  + 11H O,there are
12 22 11 2 2 2

10.0 g of sucrose and 10.0 g of oxygen reacting. Which is the limiting

reagent?
Solution path #1:
1) Calculate moles of sucrose:
0.2292146 mol

2) Calculate moles of oxygen required to react with moles of sucrose:

.3505 mole of oxygen in required

3) Determine limiting reagent:

.3125mol
Solution path #2:

1) Calculate the moles of the following:

sucrose ⇒ .0292146mol
oxygen ⇒ .3125mol

2) Divide by coefficients of balanced equation:

sucrose ⇒ .0292146mol/1mol=.0292146
oxygen ⇒.3125mol/12mol= .02604

3) Identify the limiting reagent.

- Since oxygen has lower value, then it is the limiting reagent
