Discovering the Ancient Maya
1 Long ago, the Maya people ruled Central America. They built
hundreds of cities between 300 and 800 C.E. The Maya became skilled in
math and science. They also invented a writing system with symbols
called glyphs. They wrote on pots, stones, and books.

2 About 800–900 C.E., many Maya cities failed. Thick jungles

covered their ruins. The people moved away.

3 In the 1500s, Spanish conquerors came to Central America. They destroyed

the Maya’s books and made the people speak Spanish. The Maya language
survived, but people forgot how to read the glyphs.

4 In the 1800s, scholars began trying to understand the glyphs. They finally
succeeded in 1981.
