CHAPTER NO. & NAME:2 UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS
TOPIC:CONVERSION OF ONE SYSTEM OF UNITS INTO
ANOTHER

Assignment No.:21 DATE:04.06.2021

INTRODUCTION:
Today we will learn first application of dimensional analysis namely
conversion of one system of units into another.

To convert a physical quantity from one system of units to another is based

upon the fact that the magnitude of a physical quantity remains the same
whatever may be the system of units. A physical quantity X can be written as

ASSIGNMENT NO.: 21 CLASS: 11th SUBJECT: physics DATE: 04.06.2021

X=nu
Where n is numerical value of quantity and u is the unit in which physical
quantity may be expressed.
Let M1, L1, T1 be the dimensional units of a physical quantity X in one system.
Let n1 be the numerical value in one system having dimensions a,b,c in one
system.
Therefore physical quantity
X=n1[M1a L1b T1c] …………….(1)
Similarly M2 ,L2 ,T2 be the fundamental units of the same physical quantity in
second system having numerical value n2 and dimensions a,b,c respectively.
So X=n2[M2a L2b T2C] ……………(2)
From equation (1) and (2)
n2 [M2a L2b T2c] = n1 [M1a L1b T1c]
n2 = n1[M1a/ M2a] [L1b / L2b] [T1c / T2c ]
n2 = n1[M1 /M2]a [L1 /L2]b [T1 /T2]c ……………(3)
This equation (3) can be used to find the numerical value in the second or
new system of units.

EXAMPLE 1: Let us convert one joule into erg.

Joule is SI unit of energy and erg is the CGS unit of energy. Dimensional
formula of energy is [ M L2 T-2]

Here a=1 ,b=2 ,c= -2

ASSIGNMENT NO.: 21 CLASS: 11th SUBJECT: physics DATE: 04.06.2021

SI CGS
M1=1kg = 1000g M2=1g

L1=1m = 100cm L2=1cm

T1=1s T2=1s
n1=1(joule) n2=? erg

Now n2 =n1[M1/M2]a [L1/L2]b [T1/T2]c

=1[1000g/1g]1 [100cm/1cm]2 [1s/1s]-2
=1* 10 3* 104 =107
Therefore 1 joule = 107 erg

EXAMPLE 2 : Convert one newton into dyne.

Solution : Newton is the unit of force in SI system whereas dyne is the unit
of force in CGS system.
Dimensional formula of force is [ M L T-2 ]
Here a=1 ,b=1 ,c=-2
SI System CGS System
M1=1kg M2=1g
L1=1m L2=1cm
T1=1s T2=1s
n1=1N n2=? dyne

n2 = n1[M1/M2]a [L1/L2]b [T1/T2]c

ASSIGNMENT NO.: 21 CLASS: 11th SUBJECT: physics DATE: 04.06.2021

=n1 [1kg/1g]1 [1m/1cm]1 [1s/1s]-2

=1[1000g/1g]1 [100cm/1cm]1
=1*103 *102 =105
n2=105
Therefore 1N = 105 dyne
