Exp 6. Effects of control signal current, load current, gate-to-

source capacitance and switching frequency on the
dynamic behavior of a MOSFET switch
Objectives:
Consider the N-channel MOSFET based switch designed in the previous lab session
(Experiment 5) to study the following on the dynamic characteristics (delay time: t d, rise time
tr, storage time ts, and fall time: tf) of the switch.
1. Variation in the control signal current (TTL input to the gate driver circuit).
2. Variation in the load current.
3. Variation in the switching frequency.
4. Variation in the gate-to-source capacitance connected externally to damp oscillatory
behavior as discussed in the previous lab session.
Guidelines:
1. Use IRF540 MOSFET, TLP251 Optocoupler and load resistance of 4.7Ω/10W for
implementation.
2. Vary the control signal current from 1mA to 10mA. In real systems, generally, TTL
input is considered and the current could be varied by changing the resistance in series
with input LED of the optocoupler. However, during experiment, current could be
varied by changing control signal voltage keeping the resistance constant.
3. Vary load current from 1A to 5A with switching duty cycle of 50% to keep power
dissipated in the load less than its rated value of 10W. For constant load resistance,
supply voltage could be varied for variation in the load current.
4. Vary the switching frequency from 500Hz to 5kHz.
5. Consider a few different values of capacitance below 0.1µF to study the effect of gate-
to-source capacitance connected externally.
Report:
The report must include at least the following along with other relevant material that the
students may find appropriate.
1. Labeled Circuit diagram.
2. Table of the values of your choice and record of observation for each study listed in
the objectives. Waveform plots for all the values are not required, however include in
the report the waveform corresponding to the best result in each study.
3. Concluding remarks

Exp 7. Design and Implementation of a Half Bridge Circuit

using MOSFETs and Integrated Circuit Gate Driver
Objectives:
Design and implement a half bridge circuit using MOSFETs and gate driver IC focusing on
boot-strapping capacitors based power supplies.
Guidelines:
1. Use IRF540 MOSFETs, IR2110 gate driver IC and load resistance of 4.7Ω/10W for
implementation.
2. Draw carefully labeled circuit diagram and find number of isolated power supplies
required for implementation. Get it verified by the instructor. Pay attention to
connecting GROUND of signal generator and other power supplies.
3. Experimentally measure delay time td, rise time tr, storage time ts, and fall time, tf for
each switch operating them individually and then calculate the required dead-time.
4. Apply complementary control signals from function generator with a dead-time 2
times larger than the value calculated in step 3. Use duty cycle and phase parameters
of the waves for dual channel output of the function generator. Use “align phase”
button after every change made to specify the output waves.
5. Gradually reduce dead-time and measure (observe) current flowing through the half
bridge when there is no load connected. Ideally there should be no current flowing
through the half bridge when complementary signals are applied with appropriate
dead-time.
6. Compare the results with those obtained in the previous lab experiment.
Report:
The report must include at least the following along with other relevant material that the
students may find appropriate.
1. Labeled Circuit diagram along with clear specification of number of isolated sources
required.
2. Measurement of dynamic parameters of each switch and calculation of the required
dead-time.
3. Procedure to set up dual channel output of the function generator for complementary
outputs with the required dead time.
4. Measurements (observations) of current through the half bridge for the
complementary control signals.
5. Discussion and conclusions.
