Fahrenheit 451, pages 88-106

Answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1. Montag says, “Did you hear them, did you hear these monsters talking about monsters? Oh God, the way they
jabber about people and their own children and themselves and the way they talk about their husbands and the
way they talk about war, dammit, I stand here and I can’t believe it!” (94).
Who is he talking about and what kinds of things do they say that Montag “can’t believe”?

He is talking about the three women he is talking to. They talk

about their husbands and children like trash, and the war as if it
doesn’t even matter. He is disgusted by this.

2. Re-read the “Dover Beach” poem (p.96). What about that poem do you think made Mrs. Phelps cry? Quote
words from the poem that you think may have had this effect on her.

“Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; and we are here as on a
darkling plain- swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, where
ignorant armies clash by night” (Bradbury 97). Her husband is going to
war, and this line most likely relates to her emotional state. It also relates
to her previous husbands too and her broken relationships with them.

3. Describe the interaction between Montag and Beatty at the firehouse. What is Beatty doing to Montag and how
does Montag respond?

He is trying to confuse Montag and force him into being a truly

loyal fireman again. He knows he is not loyal, and is trying to draw
him away from the knowledge of books by making him afraid of it
and hate it. Montag stands his ground but is also struck with panic
and fatigue.

4. After reading the last line of the section, what do you predict will happen in the next part?

I think they will burn Montag’s house and books, and

he will probably lose his job.
