Result of Pretest
Students did not like having to do a Pretest in physical education class. They gave
resistance but once I explained the importance of the test and why we were doing it the
students respected the test and did it. The results varied because half the students played
badminton before in Mr.W’s class while the other half never had played. The students
who have played before averaged around 80% while those who have not played averaged
40%. The entire class average was around 60 %. This shows the students need to have a
better understanding of the rules of badminton.
Badminton History
Badminton, England, where it was first played about 1873. The roots of the sport can be traced to
ancient Greece, China, and India, and it is closely related to the old children’s game battledore
and shuttlecock. The first unofficial all-England badminton championships for men were held in
1899, and the first badminton tournament for women was arranged the next year.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF; originally the International Badminton Federation), the
world governing body of the sport, was formed in 1934. Badminton first appeared in the
Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1972 and as an exhibition sport in 1988. At the 1992
Games it became a full-medal Olympic sport, with competition for men’s and women’s singles
(one against one) and doubles (two against two). Mixed doubles was introduced at the 1996
Games. In recent years, badminton has changed how players can score a point. In 2006, the rules
were changed to a rally point system and this now allows both players to score a point during a
rally, regardless of who served.
Badminton Rules
- In competitive adult matches, all games are played to a best of three games.
- A match consists of the best of three games of 21 points. The player/pair winning a rally
adds a point to its score.
- At 20-all, the player/pair which first gains a 2-point lead wins that game.
- At 29-all, the side scoring the 30th point wins that game.
- The player/pair winning a game serves first in the next game.
- A badminton match can be played by two opposing players (singles) or four opposing
players (doubles).
- A point is scored when the shuttlecock lands inside the opponent's court or if a returned
shuttlecock hits the net or lands outside of the court the player will lose the point.
- At the start of the rally, the server and receiver stand in diagonally opposite service
courts.
- A legal serve must be hit diagonally over the net and across the court.
- A badminton serve must be hit underarm and below the server's waist height. The whole
of the shuttle should be below 1.15 meters from the surface of the court when it is hit by
the server, with the racquet shaft pointing downwards. The shuttlecock is not allowed to
bounce. After a point is won, the players will move to the opposite serving stations for
the next point.
- The rules do not allow second serves.
- During a point a player can return the shuttlecock from inside and outside of the court.
- A player is not able to touch the net with any part of their body or racket.
- A player is not able to hit the shuttlecock twice

Students did a great job with the exit ticket. In the beginning they did not like that they have to
write in physical education class but when I said this a grade the students wrote. Most students
worked in groups and talked about what they were going to write first. Therefore a lot of the
students all wrote the same thing about the lob shot and deep shot. The students who did not get
the exit ticket had to do it for homework. Every student who had it for homework did the right
thing and did it. Every student got credit for doing this exit ticket.
Lesson 3
(C) explain the different skill cues of the forehand stroke during the peer review worksheet.
(S5.M6.8)
Name______________ Date_____________
Peer Checklist
One Student is an athlete while the other is the Coach. The athlete follows each skill cue for
each skill. The coach watches the athlete do 5 trails of each skill. Each time the skill is done
correctly the coach gives a checkmark to the student. After the athlete does each skill switch
roles and repeat the process.
Stagger Stance
Flick wrist
Rotate Forearm
Follow through
Wrist cocked
Extend arm
Racket face up
Results of Peer review worksheet
Students did a nice job overall with this worksheet. There were some students who just checked
off every skill cue and just vallied. Those students had plenty of repetitions of each skill
however. I talked to each student who did not follow the directions and explained how their
grade was affected because of that. Other students took the time after each shot and really
excelled during this activity. The feedback I got from the students who did the work sheet
correctly was that the students felt they became a better badminton player from this worksheet.
They really liked thinking about each skill between shots and seeing what they did wrong.
Lesson 5

Practice the skills below during this activity. You can try the skills using the wall or with a
partner. Circle the amount of times you did each skill using the proper skill cues. Improve each
time you do each skill. When you reach the all star level show your skills to a friend and have
them sign off on it. The goal is for everyone to be allstars at the end of the activity.

The students did much better with the post test than the pre test as expected. There were
10 100’s in the first class and 13 100’s in the others. Everyone else got 80%. Therefore
the average score of the post test was about 90% so it was very high. The average score
for the pre test was 60% therefore that was a big improvement. All the students
improved their skills and learned throughout the unit. Students learned about the rules of
badminton, history, and skill cues of badminton. They got to practice their skills in a
competitive aspect and a noncompetitive aspect. Learning and practicing helped them
succeed with the post test.
