Solar Cold storage
• The solar cold storage enables effective use of solar energy for cooling of
fruits/vegetables/other perishable items so as to store and preserve them for longer
duration.
• Economical and eco-friendly product with battery back-up upto 30hrs for chilling upto
0 degree celsius.
• Enables effective use of solar energy for cooling and preserving the perishable items.
• According to portability mainly divided into two types :

Concept study

• The Solar Cold Storage having Thermal Storage Backup for chilling of commodities up to
zero degree Celsius.
• Primarily runs on power generated from Solar Photovoltaic and can be switched to grid
during cloudy days.
• During sunshine hours the electricity generated from solar photovoltaic is used to provide
cooling through a vapor compression refrigeration cycle to cool a cold room as well as store
cooling energy in a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System.

9
Concept study(Contd.)

• Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system the cold energy is stored in phase change material such
as water or water salt eutectic mixture and transferred to the cold storage unit depending on
the usage needs.
• During non-solar hours, the cooling needs of cold storage unit are met through the stored
cooling in the thermal energy storage system.

10
CFD Analysis

• CFD analysis on prototype was performed to determine the blower fans’ positions,
exhaust position and door position for room.
• Ansys Fluent and Autodesk CFD were used for performing the analysis.

11
Final model

• From the results obtained from analysis two different types of solar cold storage of
different purposes were designed in Catia.
• 1st type is portable for transportation while 2nd type is fixed type that will be installed in
farm.
• Basic assembly consists of cold room, base, lifting structure for portable SCS and solar
mounting structure for fixed type. While control unit is mostly same for both with minor
changes in designs for weight reduction.

12
Product design for manufacturing

• Main assembly was divided into 5 sub assemblies.

• Control unit was further divided in 6 sub assemblies.
• I worked on all assembly drawings except the assembly drawing of
thermal plate rack.
• Creating a functional bill of material is the crucial part of any assembly.
• A assembly drawing should also include the welding specifications and
the assembly should be well constraint using proper GD&T.

13
Product design for manufacturing

• Providing notes is also important in assembly drawing to avoid mistakes

in manufacturing.
• While designing the chiller unit notes for breezing and soldering were
provided.
• GA drawing for only fixed type was also provided by me.

Final product(manufactured)

• Based on designs 2 final product were manufactured.

• One of them in installed in Telangana.

Conclusion/outcomes

• During this internship, I learned a lot about how to design a large

scale product, what to consider while modeling the product and
how to plan this type of large scale project.
• I learnt about the applications of GD&T in actual working
projects.
• I also learnt about P&ID for refrigeration unit and understood the
importance and necessity of affordable and ecofriendly storage
systems in our country.
• This internship also helped me to sharpen my technical skills
such as CAD, CAE, CFD, etc. which was a booster n my
confidence that I can apart from imagining also implement new
ideas in functionable products
• Apart from technical knowledge, I also realize how much efforts
are required to manufacture a even a small part of an entire
assembly.
