My Brother's Peculiar Chicken
My Brother's Peculiar Chicken
A short story is an account of human beings responding to human situations. Where do writers of fiction
get their materials that are the substance of literature? There are four general sources of materials,
namely, the author's personal experiences, his/her observations of other people and their experiences,
the impressions he/she gets from readings, and his/her imagination.
There are several things to consider when reading a short story. The reader must consider the emotional
attitude of the writer toward his/her material. The story has meaning because of the writer's attitude
toward life and the conclusions drawn from his/her experiences. This gives the writer the theme. Here
are some suggestions to get to the meaning of a story.
1. Study the opening lines of the short story. They suggest the general tone of the story. This tone
will be intensified as the. story progresses.
2. Note the words that suggest emotion at the beginning of the story. Identify the emotion. Do the
words refer to characters or to a place?
3. Read the concluding sentences carefully. Again try to figure out the author's feelings. Read
between the lines to catch the subtle overtones.
You have already studied plot, setting, character, and other elements in a short story. Now you are
ready to read a short story with understanding and appreciation.
