CMC
• CMC is a form of communication
through electronic message systems
and electronic conference system and it
can be divided into two parts which are
(Adrianson as cited in Derks, Fischre, &
Bos, 2007):

• Synchronous – Interaction occurs

simultaneously between users such as
through chatting

Asynchronous – Independence of real
time such as through e-mail

HOW IMPORTANT IS
SELECTING AN
APPROPRIATE MEDIUM
IN COMMUNICATION?

DISADVANTAGES

• Security issues
• Decreased interpersonal relationships
• Information overload
• Depersonalization
• Increase stress
• Lower degree of friendliness and emotional display
F2F AND CMC
• Auditory and visual nonverbal communication channels are not activated in
prevalent types of CMC
• There is much less immediacy in CMC because of its asynchronicity and lack of
nonverbal cues
• Message feedback is greatly reduced in quality and quantity, thus increasing
uncertainty and the possibility of misunderstandings
• The communicator(s) can be anonymous and no information on their body image
has to be provided in CMC
• Information that is related to cultural and ethnic background, social status, gender,
and age is often reduced, suppressed, or simply not present in CMC
• The “social presence” of the recipient(s) of the message is reduced in CMC and this
facilitates problematic behaviors like disinhibition, flaming, etc.
MEDIA RICHNESS THEORY
(DAFT AND LENGEL)
• The transmission of rich information requires
instantaneous feedback and a higher level of
interactivity that is characterized of a rich medium.
• Speed, Interactivity, and Completeness are attributes
that can be used to analyze the richness of a specific
medium (Spitzberg, 2001).
BUSINESS CASE
You are a consultant specializing in Management and Cooperation. You receive a phone call from a new client,
Pheben Smith, the President of Rockland Jewelers, a jewelry wholesaler located in New York.

• Pheben: "I inherited Rockland Jewelers from my father, who founded the company in 1957. Rockland
Jewelers was one of the first boutique wholesalers of Jewelry in New York- We have a very small distribution
network, and we distribute rare jewelry. We do not have that much sales volume since very few people can
afford to buy our jewelry, but it is still very profitable since no other company in New York has the same
pieces like us, and so we charge a substantial markup."
• Consultant: "That's a very precious business. So how can I help?"
• Pheben: "I have taken a lot of pride in operating the business the exact same way as my father did. All
meetings are in person because we want to keep the family feeling. Whenever we have to communicate with
our team members, we often do so over coffee or in each other's offices. We only got computers when our
accountants needed them. However, the computers have no use internally - They're just used to print order
forms that we physically mail to clients. On top of that, I'm not exactly tech-savvy myself. The problem is that
I'm starting to reconsider. We have a hard time recruiting new employees since everyone is so used to using
emails and instant messaging to communicate. In addition, we have has some order forms that got lost in
the mail or that arrived too late to the customer's address. We also have to find ways to cut costs because
rare jewelry is not as popular as it used to be. What do you think? Should we shift to computer-mediated
communications?"
