Build Background
Help students think about their relationships with their siblings or other younger children.
Build interest in the story by asking the following questions: ¿Alguna vez han tenido que
ayudar a un hermano o un amigo que se metió en problemas? ¿Qué hicieron para ayudar?
Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Ask students to point out
details on the cover that suggest this story is humorous fiction.

Introduce the Text

Guide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar
language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some
suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that this is a story about a brother and sister who visit their
mother at work.
Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 del cuento. Lean la leyenda debajo de

Page 3: Point to the illustration. Hay un niño pequeño llamado Tomasito, su

Choices For Further Support

• Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text to act out. Remind them to
vary their tone based on the character they are portraying. Remind them also to pay
attention to punctuation, especially in split dialogue.
• Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion,
revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go
back to the text to support their ideas.
• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts using
examples from the text. Tell students that in a story told by one person (a first-person
narrator), it is important that the language sounds natural. Remind them that in
Spanish it is not always necessary to mention who the subject of a sentence is. Read
the following sentence on page 7: Llevé a Fifí al lavadero. Explain that another way of
saying the same could be Yo llevé a Fifí al lavadero. Have students find more examples
in the story.

Understanding Characters Remind students that thinking about why the
characters in a story act as they do will help them understand the story. Model the skill,
using this Think Aloud:

Working in pairs, have one partner make a list of things they learned about the older sister
and the other do the same for Tomasito. Then have them describe their character to their
partner, using examples to back up their descriptions.

Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the Text

Have students write a response to the prompt on page 6. Remind them that when they
think beyond the text, they use what they know and their own experience to think about
what the characters do and why they act as they do.

Assessment Prompts
• Find the sentence on page 5 that shows when the older sister first suspects that
Tomasito will cause trouble while helping Mom.
• Did Tomasito put hair gel in Fifí’s bath on purpose or by accident? Why do you
think that?
