Unit-Wide Lesson Plan Template - Explained

Name: Jason Howes Program: Secondary Ed Math Course: EDU
Student Teaching. 361

Lesson Topic / Title: Volume and Surface Area

Lesson Date: March 10 Lesson Length: 6 to 7 - 45 Grade/Age: 7 Grade

minutes periods.

Learning Objectives & Content Standard Alignment - Selects, creates, and sequences
learning experiences and performance tasks that support learners in reaching rigorous
curriculum goals based on content standards.

Learning Objective(s)

● Students will solve real-world problems using to find

the surface area of 2-d and 3-d shapes

Content Standard(s)
● 7.G.6. Solve real-world and math problems involving
area, volume, and surface area of 2-d and 3-d shapes.

Assessment - Uses assessment flexibly to expand and deepen understanding of learner

performance and determines best supports for continued learner growth.

Assessment
● Building maker. Students will make a building
using their knowledge of volume or surface
area. They must label their volume and
surface area of the whole object either on the
building or on the base around it.
● Pre assessment- students are using prior
knowledge of surface area to each shape they
use.
● Formative assessment- must design a building
in the reasonable area as well as finding the
areas of each side.
● Performance assessment- Students are
constructing buildings of what the group
agrees on to make.

Instructional Materials and Resources - Stays current in content knowledge and expands
expertise in reviewing instructional materials from the perspectives of both the discipline and
individual learner needs.

Materials, Resources, and / or Technology

Students

● Pens/pencils
● Markers
● Student desks
● Paper
● Calculator
● Large paper
● Coloring supplies
● Ruler
● Cardboard
● Rubric

Teacher

● Google doc
● Expo marker/pen

Instructional Methods: Selects, creates, and sequences learning experiences and

performance tasks by using a variety of instructional approaches, strategies, and
technologies that make learning accessible to all learners and support learners in reaching
rigorous curriculum goals.

Teaching and Learning Sequence

Day 1

Prep

Make sure students have enough cardboard colored pencils, markers, rulers, and
paper for the project.

Opening

Students will walk in and take their seats.Go over attendance and tell them the plan.
“So students, the plan today is we are making our own building or house using
certain shapes that we have gone over. As groups of three you will work together to
make a building with your group. On top of that you must find the surface area of
each shape made. I will display their random groups on the board. Once they see it
they can get to work. Does anyone have any questions before I display the
groups?(5 minutes)

Body

Students work with their partners on the project. The teachers will walk around to
help in either figuring out lengths or certain problems.(35 minutes).

End

“So students before we start to pack up, what did we learn today?”After the students
will return any supplies they borrowed back, and start cleaning around their desk.
Once the area is clean I will let the student go to their next class.(5 minutes)

Meeting students’ needs (differentiation, extensions, modifications, accommodations)

● Students can use a computer to use as a calculator.

● Teacher aid can help the students solve the problems if the student gets stuck.
● Calculator is to check your answer
● If the student is out or struggling with the assignment, they can request for more
time.
● Students can use notes anytime.
● Depending where they are in the project they can listen to music.

The students will be working on this for the next couple of days, but if they need
more time I will allow it

Depending on the group of students I will allow them to either have a bigger building,
or some less shapes.

Reflection:

I think the lesson went really well. Of course next time I will buy more colored paper
and duct tape and get more cardboard, but the students seemed to enjoy it. Also for
next time I will let the students work with others just because they will work better
together on whatever they want to make. I do like not letting them pic groups just
because you never get to pick your groups in the real world. Overall though I will
definitely do this project again with my students.
Standard: 1#Learner Development. The teacher understands how students learn and
develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within
and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs,
and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

Indicator: 1.b. Creates developmentally appropriate instruction that takes into account
individual learners’ strengths, interests and needs that enable each learner to advance
and accelerate his/her learning.

Rationale I will understand how each individual student has their own strengths
through cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical skills through learning
which will help me develop appropriate lessons.

Standard 8# Instructional Strategies. The teacher understands and uses a variety of

instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of
content areas and their connections, and to build skills to access and appropriately
apply information.

Indicator:8.a. Uses appropriate strategies and resources to adapt instruction to the

needs of individuals and groups of learners.

Rationale- I will understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to build and
apply the needs for either individuals and group learning for the appropriate content
area.
