Eng 13 – THX7

(1) Based on our readings thus far, do you think there is a significant difference between the kind
of writing that you did in high school and the kind of writing that is expected of you in college?
- Most of my writing in high school could be described in two kinds: an opinionated writing and
a Q&A writing. Most are close-ended and does not stimulate questions to discover or new ideas
to ponder on. While college-level of writing shows a huge difference from the high school level.
Critical thinking is crucial, and data to support and prove your ideas or claims is a must to make
your writing acceptable.
(2) Describe your writing process.
- My process in writing is kind of careful, because I tend to take a lot of time organizing my
bursting thoughts before I start outlining and drafting.
(3) Are you a member of more than one discourse communities? How do you navigate from one
discourse community to another given that some of them have different goals, conventions, etc.?
- Yes. Navigating is not that much difficult, but I do wire myself to the goals of the communities
I am in. It’s like acknowledging that you have these goals as a part of your life, even if they are
not related. But I must take it one at a time, to avoid getting confused or overwhelmed.
(4) What are the roles of identity and culture in your discourse communities?
- Identity and culture give a certain, if not unique, perspective of the way on how to fulfil your
common goal. Identity helps to discover yourself in relation to your community, and how you as
an individual what to contribute to the community. Culture, on the other hand, could create a
particular point of view in relation with the goal of the discourse community. The readings stated
that it isn’t necessary that every member of the discourse should agree to each other’s
perspective, so culture could be a potential factor that forms either a peculiar stand that could
contribute to the discourse, or could also object arguments that could still lead to new discoveries
through discourse, while still having the same goal.
