Remove & Install Main Hydraulic Pump


Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that the fluids are contained during performance of the inspection,
the maintenance, the testing, the adjusting and the repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the
fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling of the any
components containing fluids. Refer to the "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for the
tools and the supplies suitable to collect and contain any of the fluids in Caterpillar machines.
Dispose of the fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: The 3064 Engine removal and the installation procedure was completed with the main
hydraulic pump still connected. The main hydraulic pump was then separated and connected in
another procedure. The 3064 Engine can be removed with or without the main hydraulic pump.

NOTICE

Do not attempt to remove the main hydraulic pump with four nuts (X)
that hold the pump to the adapter and the flywheel housing. The bolts
are required to be tightened from the coupling side of the adapter,
therefore the main hydraulic pump can only be removed by removing
the bolts that hold the adapter to the flywheel housing.

Start By:

a. remove hood assembly*

*This operation is in the 3064 Engine Supplement For 311B & 312B Excavators Disassembly &
Assembly module, SENR9223.

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under


pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury,
release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (the boom, the
stick and the bucket) before any of the hydraulic lines or any of the
components are disconnected or removed.

1. Release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (the boom, the stick and the bucket)
before any of the hydraulic lines or any of the components are disconnected or removed. Release
the pressure as follows:

a. Shut off the engine and place key in the "ON" position. Put the hydraulic activation
control lever in the "UNLOCK" position.
b. Move the control levers for the boom, the stick and the swing to all full stroke positions.
This will release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system.
c. Return the key to the "OFF" position.
d. Slowly loosen the fill plug on the hydraulic tank, and release the pressure.
e. Tighten the fill plug on the hydraulic tank.
f. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released, the lines and the components can
be removed.

NOTE: Drain the hydraulic tank oil into a suitable container.

2. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank into a suitable container. The capacity of the hydraulic
oil tank is 99 liters (26 U.S. gal).

3. Remove two bolts (1) and the washers that secure plate (2). Remove plate (2) from the machine.

4. Remove five bolts (3) and the washers that secure plate (4). Remove plate (4) from the machine.

5. Remove four bolts (5) and the washers that secure plate (6). Remove plate (6) from the
machine.

6. Disconnect electrical connector (7) from the governor motor control.

7. Remove two bolts (8) and the washers that secure the governor cable clamp.

8. Remove two bolts (9) and the washers that secure the governor cable clamp.

9. Remove three bolts (12) and the washers that secure the governor motor control (10) to support
(11).

10. Remove three bolts (13) and the washers that secure support (11) to the machine.

11. Remove final two bolts (14) and the washers that secure support (11) from the machine.
Remove support (11) from the machine.

12. Remove four bolts (15) that secure guard (16).

13. Remove bolts (17) that secure the wire clamp to guard (16). Remove guard (16).

14. Remove two hose assemblies (19) and (20) from pilot pump (18).

15. Remove five hose assemblies (21), (22), (23), (25) and (26) from the main hydraulic pump
(24).

16. Disconnect electrical connector (27) from the main hydraulic pump (24).

17. Remove bolt (28) and the washer that secure the wire clamp.

18. Remove hose assembly (29) from the main hydraulic pump (24).

19. Remove four bolts (30) and the washers that secure the suction line to the main hydraulic
pump (24).

20. Attach a suitable lifting device to the main hydraulic pump (24) and support he pump with a
hoist.

21. Remove 12 bolts (31) and the washers that secure the main hydraulic pump adapter (32) to the
flywheel housing of the engine.

22. Carefully remove the main hydraulic pump (24) from the machine. The weight of the main
hydraulic pump is 120 kg (275 lb).

NOTE: The following are the steps for the installation of the main hydraulic pump.

23. Check the condition of all O-ring seals. If any of the O-ring seals are worn or damaged, use
new parts for replacement.

24. Using a suitable lifting device, install the main hydraulic pump in the machine. When
installing the main hydraulic pump insure that the pump drive coupling is properly aligned with
the engine.

25. Install 12 bolts (31) and the washers that secure the main hydraulic pump adapter (32) to the
engine flywheel housing.

26. Install four bolts (30) that secure the suction pipe to the main hydraulic pump (24).

27. Connect hose assembly (29).

28. Install bolt (28) and the washer that secure the wire clip to the hydraulic pump (24).

29. Connect electrical connector (27).

30. Connect five hose assemblies (21), (22), (23), (25) and (26) to the main hydraulic pump (24).

31. Connect two hose assemblies (19) and (20) to the pilot pump (18).

32. Install four bolts (15) and the washers that secure guard (16).

33. Install bolt (17) and the washer that secures wire clip to guard (16).

34. Install five bolts (13), (14) and the washers that secure support (11).

35. Install three bolts (12) and the washers that secure the governor motor control (10) to support
(11).

36. Install two bolts (9) and the washers that secure the governor motor control linkage clip.

37. Install two bolts (8) and the washers that secure the governor motor control linkage clip.

38. Connect electrical connector (7) to the governor motor control.

39. Install four bolts (5) and the washers that secure plate (6).

40. Install five bolts (3) and the washers that secure plate (4).

41. Install two bolts (1) and the washers that secure plate (1).

NOTE: Refer to the topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation &
Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the hydraulic oil
system.

42. Fill the hydraulic oil tank to the correct level.

a. remove main hydraulic pump and pump drive coupling

NOTICE

During the disassembly of the main hydraulic pump, mark all of the
components so they can be reinstalled in their original locations.
Mixing of the components will shorten the service life of the pump.

NOTE: For the disassembly and the assembly of the pump drive coupling, refer to the 3064
Engine Supplement for 311B, 312B and 312B L Excavators, Disassembly & Assembly module,
SENR9223.

1. Make sure the outside of the main hydraulic pump is thoroughly clean prior to disassembly. Put
an alignment mark across the pump housings and the center section for assembly purposes.

2. Remove four bolts (1) and coupler (2).

3. Loosen two bolts (3), and remove hub (4) from the hydraulic pump shaft.

4. Remove four bolts (5), the nuts and the washers that hold cover (6) to the main hydraulic pump.
Remove the cover.

5. Remove two bolts (7) and pilot pump (8) from the main hydraulic pump.

6. Remove four bolts (9) and the pressure compensating valve (10) from the main hydraulic pump.

7. Remove eight O-ring seals (11) and one O-ring seal (12) from the pressure compensating valve
(10).

NOTE: There is slight spring pressure behind cover (14).

8. Remove four bolts (13) and cover (14) from the pressure compensating valve.

9. Remove five O-ring seals (15), pin (16), sleeve (17) and spring (18) from the pressure
compensating valve.

10. Remove case (19) and the piston (not shown) from the pressure compensating valve. Remove
O-ring seal (20) from the case.

11. Remove retaining ring (21), spring (22) and the seat from the pressure compensating valve.

NOTE: There is slight spring pressure behind cover (24).

12. Remove four bolts (23) and cover (24).

13. Remove spring (25), spring (26), spring seat (27) and O-ring seal (28) from the pressure
compensating valve.

14. Remove four bolts (29) and cover (30).

15. Remove three O-ring seals (31) and seal (32) from cover (30).

16. Remove two retaining rings (33).

17. Install an appropriate sized bolt to aid in the removal of plugs (34) and (35).

18. Remove seal (36) from plugs (34) and (35).

NOTE: Plug (34) has a guide pin.

19. Remove lever assembly (37) and spool (38).

20. Remove spool (39) from the pressure compensating valve. Remove seal (40) from spool (39).

21. Remove rod (41) from the pressure compensating valve.

22. Remove lever assembly (42) from the pressure compensating valve.

23. Remove lever assembly (43) and spool (44) after the pin (not shown) has been removed.

24. Use a punch to remove retainer (45), spring (46) and spring seat (47). Remove seal (48) from
retainer (45).

25. If necessary, remove fitting (49). Inspect the seal for damage or wear.

26. Remove four bolts (50) and pressure compensating valve (51) from the main hydraulic pump.

NOTICE

Keep the parts of the two pressure compensating valves separate.

27. Following the procedure in steps 7 through 25, disassemble the other pressure compensating
valve.

28. Remove four bolts (52) and carefully remove cover (53).

29. Remove O-ring seal (54) from the cover. If necessary, remove seal (55) from the cover.

30. Remove four bolts (56) and support plate (57) from the front body assembly.

31. Remove shaft assembly (58) from support plate (57).

32. Remove retaining ring (59) that holds bearing (60) in position on the shaft. Using a press, push
the shaft out of bearing (60).

33. Remove spacer (61), race (62), spacer (63) and the washer (64) from the shaft assembly.

34. Separate front body assembly (65) from the block assembly.

36. Remove swash plate (66) and two O-ring seals (67) from front body assembly (65).

NOTICE

During the removal of the barrel assembly (68), do not let the
components fall apart. The piston assemblies should be reinstalled in
their original bores in the retainer and the barrel assembly.

36. Carefully remove barrel assembly (68) from the front body assembly. Remove O-ring seals
(69).

37. If necessary, remove pin assembly (70) from the front body assembly. Remove plate (71) from
the front body assembly.

38. Put identification marks on nine piston assemblies (72) as to their location in retainer (73) and
barrel (74). Remove the barrel assemblies from the retainer and the barrel.

39. Remove retainer guide (75) and the washer (76) from the barrel.

40. Remove nine springs (77) from the barrel.

41. Remove four bolts (78), and separate block assembly (79) from the rear body assembly.

42. Remove O-ring seals (80) from each side of block assembly (79).

43. Remove barrel plate (81) from each side of block assembly (79).

44. Remove two bearings (82) and coupling (83) from the block assembly.

45. Remove four bolts (84) and cover (85) from the rear body assembly.

46. Remove O-ring seal (86) from cover (85).

NOTICE

Keep all of the parts of the front body assembly and the rear body
assembly separate.

47. Following the procedure in steps 28 through 40, disassemble the rear body assembly.

NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the main hydraulic pump.

48. Make sure all of the parts for the front body assembly, the block assembly and the rear body
assembly are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to assembly.

NOTICE

Do not mix part from the front and the rear body assemblies during
the assembly.

49. Install O-ring seal (86) on cover (85).

50. Position cover (85) on the rear body assembly. Install four bolts (84) that hold it. Tighten the
bolts to a torque of 12 ± 1 N·m (9 ± 1 lb ft).

51. Install two bearings (82) and coupling (83) in the block assembly.

52. Install barrel plate (81) on each side of block assembly (79).

53. Install O-ring seals (80) on each side of block assembly (79).

54. Install the block assembly (79) on the rear body assembly. Install the four bolts (78) that hold
the unit together. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 235 ± 20 N·m (172 ± 15 lb ft).

55. Install nine springs (77) in barrel (74).

56. Install washer (76) and retainer guide (75) on the barrel.

57. Put clean hydraulic oil on nine piston assemblies (72). Install the piston assemblies in their
original bores in retainer (73). Install the retainer with the piston assemblies in their original bores
in barrel (74).

58. If removed, install pin assembly (70) in the front body assembly. Install plate (71) to the front
body assembly.

NOTICE

During the installation of the barrel assembly (68), do not let the
components fall apart. The piston assemblies should be reinstalled in
their original bores in the retainer and the barrel assembly.

59. Carefully install barrel assembly (68) in the front body assembly. Install O-ring seals (69).

60. Install swash plate (66) and two O-ring seals (67) to front body assembly (65).

61. Position front body assembly (65) in alignment with the block assembly.

62. Put washer (64), spacer (63), bearing (60), race (62) and spacer (61) on shaft (58).

63. Using a press, push the shaft into bearing (60). Install retaining ring (59) that holds bearing
(60) in position on the shaft.

64. Install shaft assembly (58) in support plate (57).

65. Install four bolts (56) that hold support plate (57), and the front body assembly to the block
assembly. Tighten bolts (56) to a torque of 235 ± 20 N·m (172 ± 15 lb ft).

66. If removed, install seal (55) to the cover. Install O-ring seal (54) to the cover.

67. Position cover (53) on the front body assembly. Install four bolts (52) that hold it. Tighten the
bolts to a torque of 12 ± 1 N·m (9 ± 1 lb ft).

NOTICE

Keep the parts of the two pressure compensating valve separate.

68. If removed, install fitting (49).

69. Put seal (48) on retainer (45). Install spring seat (47), spring (46) and retainer (45) in the valve
body.

70. Install the pin (not shown) to the valve body. Install spool (44) and lever assembly (43).

71. Install lever assembly (42) in the pressure compensating valve.

72. Install rod (41) in the pressure compensating valve.

73. Put seal (40) on spool (39). Install spool (39) in the pressure compensating valve.

74. Install spool (38) and lever assembly (37).

75. Install seal (36) to plugs (34) and (35).

NOTE: Plug (34) has a guide pin.

76. Install an appropriate sized bolt to aid in the installation of plugs (34) and (35). Install the
plugs.

77. Install two retaining rings (33).

78. Install three O-ring seals (31) and seal (32) to cover (30).

79. Install four bolts (29) that hold cover (30).

80. Put O-ring seal (28) on the pressure compensating valve. Install spring seat (27), spring (26)
and valve (25) in the valve.

81. Position cover (24), and install four bolts (23) that hold it.

82. Install spring (22) and retaining ring (21) to the seat in the pressure compensating valve.

83. Install O-ring seal (20) to the case. Install case (19) and the piston (not shown) in the pressure
compensating valve.

84. Install spring (18), sleeve (17), pin (16) and five O-ring seals (15) to the pressure
compensating valve.

85. Position cover (14), and install four bolt (13) that hold it.

86. Install eight O-ring seals (11) and one O-ring seal (12) to the pressure compensating valve
(10).

87. Install four bolts (9) and pressure compensating valve (10) to the main hydraulic pump.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 29 ± 3 N·m (21 ± 2 lb ft).

88. If necessary, repeat the procedure in steps 68 thru 87 for the other pressure compensating
valve.

89. Position pilot pump (8) on the main hydraulic pump, and install bolts (7) that hold it.

90. Reinstall cover (6) in its original position on the main hydraulic pump. Install four bolts (5),
the nuts and the washers that hold the cover in place.

91. Put hub (4) on the hydraulic pump shaft, and install two bolts (3). Tighten the bolts to a torque
of 107 ± 10 N·m (75 ± 7 lb ft).

92. Install coupler (2) and bolts (1) that hold it. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 215 ± 10 N·m (155
± 7 lb ft).

End By:

a. install main hydraulic pump and pump drive coupling
