VERB PATTERNS

Verbs followed by Infinitives.

Verb + (not) TO V (Base Form)

afford learn refuse strive


fail prepare seek tend
hasten proceed seem try

E.g.: No one here can afford to get a Mercedes Benz.

Ingrid would like to learn to speak French.

Jairo failed to get a good grade on the last exam.

Verbs followed by Gerunds.

Verb + (not) Ving

can’t help enjoy (not) mind postpone


can’t see get through miss risk
can’t stand keep on

E.g.: Dani can’t help being shy when she meets people.

Melody doesn’t mind preparing dinner for her family.

Gabriel misses playing soccer with his friends at high school recess.

Verbs followed by Infinitives or Gerunds without changing meaning.

hate like love

E.g.: I love dancing. = I love to dance.


Verbs followed by Object + Infinitive.

Verb + Object + (not) TO V (Base Form)

advise cause inspire persuade


allow convince instruct require
authorize encourage permit urge
Other verbs: ask, beg, enable, expect, forbid, force, hate, implore, invite, like, love, need, prohibit, remind, tell, warn

E.g.: My father loves that I cook for him.  My father loves me to cook for him.

I expect that you pass the level.  I expect you to pass the level.

I would like that my family can take a vacation abroad.  I would like my family to take a vacation abroad.

Alex’s parents encouraged him to get his driver’s license.

Caro hates people to eat with their mouths open.

Ale’s parents have never allowed her to sleep over at a friend’s.

Verbs followed by Object + Gerund.

Verb + Object + Preposition Ving

E.g.: I don’t mind you making questions about the class.

Christopher would never forgive anyone for hurting someone in his family.

Melody has interested her brother in painting anime.  Melody has made her brother be interested in painting.
 Melody has “convinced” her brother to be interested.
