1. Determine the number of points of intersection in the linear-quadratic system defined by:
𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 7
𝑔(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 2
(2 marks)

2. Simplify the following radical expression. Express your answer in simplest mixed radical form.

Part B: Inquiry / Thinking (10 marks)

5. An invisible Cena-like odd-shaped plastic projectile is trying to be tossed awkwardly in the air.
After taking some time to get it off the ground, it’s flight somehow follows a parabolic shape.
The height of the object is modelled by the quadratic function below. 𝐻(𝑡) is the height of the
projectile (in meters) after 𝑡 seconds.
𝐻(𝑡) = −4.9𝑡 2 + 58.8𝑡 − 98

a) Determine the maximum height of the projectile.

(4 marks)

b) How long does it take the object to land on the ground AFTER taking off?
(4 marks)

c) What is the height of the projectile after 4.5 seconds?

(1 mark)

d) What happens to the object when it hits the ground? {be creative, not mathematical!}

horizontally, it just passes over a tree that is 3m tall before hitting the ground 28m from where
it was launched.
a) Sketch a diagram to represent the situation.
(2 marks)

b) If the ball begins at the origin, determine the equation of the quadratic function (in factored

e) State the domain and range of the function.
