Universal Design for Learning

General Activity Information:

The theme of this lesson is Cat in the Hat and was inspired by the book “oh, the things you can do that
are good for you” by Tish Rabe. This multi-disciplinary lesson was chosen for students ages two to six
years old, specifically for preschool children (3-5 years old). This book was selected because it teaches
children the importance of staying healthy and being active every day. The children are in the Preschool
for All learner’s program in the Los Angeles Unified School District. There are twelve students in the class
with a wide range of disabilities that include Autism, orthopedic impairments, dwarfism, Down
syndrome, visual impairment, and intellectual disabilities. This lesson will take place outside in an open
area.

Physical Education Standards & Content Areas:

This lesson will focus on fundamental motor skills, specifically locomotor skills, balance, manipulative
skills and moving in general space.

Kindergarten Standards

1.1 Travel within a large group, without bumping into others or falling, while using locomotor skills.

1.6 Balance on one, two, three, four, and five body parts

1.10 Travel in straight, curved, and zigzag pathways.

1.11 Jump over a stationary rope several times in succession, using forward-and-back and side-to-side
movement patterns.

1.13 Toss a ball to oneself, using the underhand throw pattern, and catch it before it bounces twice

Behavioral Objectives:

 Motor Objectives:
1) With visual, verbal, and physical prompting, students will jump inside of a hula hoop with proper
form (taking off two feet, landing on two feet) at least 3 out of 4 times with 75% accuracy by the
end of the APE session.
2) Students will use a stomp ball launcher by using their dominant foot to stomp and launch a
small ball into a hula hoop with verbal, visual and physical prompting at least 3 out of 4 times
with 75% accuracy by the end of the APE session.
3) Students will balance at least 10 seconds on a static skateboard (balance board) by having bent
knees and airplane arms with verbal, visual, and physical prompting at least 3 out 4 times with
75% accuracy by the end of the APE session.
4) Students will throw a scarf, beach ball, or 6-inch playground by using their dominant hand,
stepping with opposition repeating the cues (step, point throw) to partner at least 5 feet away
with verbal and visual prompting at least 3 out 4 times with 75% accuracy by the end of the APE
session

 Cognitive Objectives:
1) Utilizing visuals, students will identify the correct cues for throwing by pointing or
demonstrating to a paraprofessional or the APE teacher.
 Affective Objective:
1) Students will pick up at least three pieces of equipment at the end of the lesson with verbal
prompting to earn a sticker.
