exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

A Great Way of Expression

by: Marilou M. Pangilinan, PhD

3
In this time of pandemic, when people experience strict community quarantines and
protocols just to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus, the youths, need a pace to
creatively express their feelings, relax their minds and free themselves from negative vibes
and effects of the sudden lockdown to promote sound mental health. During the strict
community quarantine, there were trending forms of entertainment or art where people were
able to express themselves in different ways.

It is in this light that a remarkable day for San Ildefonso young artists was pushed last
January 20, 2021. The first mural painting contest was held in the municipality initiated by the
local government as part of the celebration of the feast of the patron saint, St. Ildefonsus.

Mural painting is an artistic and great way of expression which reflects to the inner
state, feelings, and thoughts of an artist.

The mural painting contest aimed to let the youth of San Ildefonso showcase their
talents in mural painting by group of three through artistically expressing their feelings and
thoughts connected to the theme “Gifted to Give” which is very timely.

There were many youths San Ildefonsonians who joined the contest. They painted the
wall of San Ildefonso Commercial Complex. Their murals gave color and added beauty to the
place.

All of the participants did their best to bring home the bacon but still only the top three
placers were awarded. Their works were evaluated by the judges, Mr. Glem Bernardo, Mrs.
Maricel C. Jacutan and Mrs. Mylene Silos, who are art mentors in the field of education and
all pioneers in mural paintings.

Veronica Jane Reyes’ group bagged the 1st place and the Php 12,000.00, John Mark
Marquez’s group won the 2nd place and Php 10,000.00 while Arvhic San Diego’s group got
the 3rd place spot and Php 7,000.00.

The murals were evaluated considering content, relevance and the different elements
of murals as visual arts.

Answer the following questions based on the selection.

1. What remarkable day for San Ildefonso young artists was held last January 20, 2021?

2. What is the objective of the said program?

3. How were the murals evaluated?

4. If you were one of the participants who joined, given the theme “Gifted to Give”, what
will you include in your mural?

5. How does art/mural painting become a great way of expression?

What is It

Analyzing Visual Media Elements

Try to look and examine the photo below. It is a poster which took second place in a
Science Poster Making Contest about the role of science and technology in improving the
environment. Examine the elements and try to interpret what is the message that the artist
wants to convey.

Poster is a form of visual media.

Visual media is a good source of data or information in the form of visual

representations which include abstractions, analogues, rough illustrations or digital
representations of objects or subjects. It is very important to know how to properly interpret
different forms of visual media because it helps you as a reader in clarifying and
comprehending information. Through properly interpreting visual elements, you will be able to
develop own perception of the content and avoid misinterpretations.

Some forms of visual media, be it printed or digital, are paintings, caricatures, posters,
murals, drawings, infographics and comics.

Visual media is interpreted through looking at the visual elements. These are the
characteristics that we can see such as line, shape, direction, size, texture, color and value.

5
Here are some most common visual elements:

1. Lines- These are set of points extending in both

directions, used to create shapes, forms and textures. It
can vary in direction, length and width.

a. Horizontal Lines- These are straight lines

parallel to the horizon that move from left to right. They
suggest width, distance, calmness and stability.

b. Vertical Lines- These are straight up and down lines that are moving in space without any
slant and are perpendicular to horizontal lines. They suggest height and strength because
they extend towards the sky and seem unshakeable.

c. Diagonal Lines- These are straight lines that slant in any direction except horizontal or
vertical. They suggest movement and lack of stability.
.
d. Zigzag Lines- These are series of diagonal lines joined at ends. They convey action,
excitement, restlessness and anxiety.

e. Curve Lines- These are lines that bend and change direction. They can be wavy or spiral.
These lines suggest the feeling of comfort and ease.

♫+√®
2. Symbols- These instantly make people think of traits
or message that they want to associate with a subject.
These help us recognize, identify and recall images than
texts. These are commonly used in logos and signages.

¥¤ß©
Some forms such as posters and caricatures use
symbols which have definite meaning.

3. Color- It is a very powerful visual element which can

create varied emotions. Color suggests different
meanings and emotions in visual media as follow:

a. orange- joy, enthusiasm, fascination, happiness,

creativity, determination, attraction, success and
encouragement

b. yellow- happiness, optimism, creativity, cowardice and madness

c. black, white and gray- simplicity and balance

6
d. green- life, renewal, nature, growth, harmony, freshness, safety, fertility, money, finances,
banking, ambition, greed and jealousy
e. rainbow- friendly, fun and youthful

f. red- warm, anger, adventure, violence, fire, blood, passion, love and excitement

g. blue- cool, calmness, peace, trust, wisdom, loyalty, confidence, intelligence, faith and
heaven

4. Gaze- It means to stare or look fixedly at something.

It means to look steadily and intently at something,
especially at that which excites admiration, curiosity and
interest. To gaze with eyes widely open can mean
surprise, wonder, alarm or witnessing unbelievable.
Looking and observing the eyes and gaze of the subject
can help us infer the emotion.

5. Framing- It deals with the proper placement of subject

together with the other images. It is used to highlight the
subject inside a particular frame. Using frames can give
more emphasis to the subject.

6. Space- It is the area covered by the entire artwork. It

can be positive and negative. Understanding the
positive and negative space plays important role in the
composite of artwork. Positive space denotes the area
of interest or the subject of the artwork.

Looking at the elements of any form of visual media can help us understand what the
image wants to convey. From these, we can also infer what the character is feeling or thinking
through processing the elements. Thus, these can be great tools for better understanding a
visual medium.
