Problems for Hands-on Session
One or more of the following problems can be attempted during the hands-on session.
You may work on your own, or in teams. It may be a good idea if a team comprises
members from diverse backgrounds (e.g., student, practising engineer). It may be
possible to solve only part of a problem during the hands-on session. You may
consider starting the work before the session.
1. Seismic weight of a building will be provided during the hands-on session along
with the load coming on to a typical lead rubber bearing supporting the
structure. The building is in Zone IV resting on soil type I.
a. Design the lead rubber bearing.
b. Determine the design base shear for superstructure.
c. Determine the design base shear for the substructure.
d. Perform stability check as per IS1893
e. Determination of base-shear and storey shear forces as per equivalent
lateral force procedure
f. Modeling of fixed and base-isolated RCC building in SAP2000 and
determination of modal properties
g. Application of three analysis procedures: i) Equivalent Static Analysis, ii)
Response spectrum Analysis, and iii) Time-History Analysis to
determine response parameters (forces, accelerations etc) and
prediction of the three analysis procedures
h. Performance comparison of fixed-base vs base-isolated buildings
2. Consider an eight-story building located in New Delhi (Zone IV) founded on a
hard soil stratum. Plan view of the building is same as that provided in the
supplementary document. Other properties can be inferred from the document
as well.
a. Estimate the isolation system displacement considering Friction
Pendulum bearings with a sliding period of 3 s and a coefficient of friction
of 0.06±0.01. Design the isolators.
b. Determine the design base shear for the superstructure.
c. Determine the design base shear for the substructure.
d. Consider the Friction Pendulum bearing designed for this problem.
Model it using SAP2000. An example SAP2000 model is provided.
Subject it to the corresponding axial load. Perform a pushover analysis
on the isolator up to its displacement capacity. Report the lateral force-
displacement response (corresponding to the upper bound properties).
Compare it with corresponding hand calculations.
e. Consider the Friction Pendulum bearing designed for this problem.
Subject it to a three-component ground motion using SAP2000. An
example SAP2000 model is provided. Determine the peak isolation
system displacement (consider lower bound properties). Compare it with
that obtained using corresponding response spectrum through the
iterative procedure. Note that the response spectrum used here is
different from that used in the design.
