I. Introduction
the SCD 193 A is also known as Specialized Practice in Community Immersion &
Social Investigation. it is a six unit course offered in the BS Sustainable Community
Development practicum at Mindanao State University’s College of Public Affairs. it is one
of the four practicum courses along with the SCD 193 B (Community Organizing and
Mobilization), SCD 193 C (Community Project Development and Management), and SCD
193 D (Community Training). The students will be assigned in the community and they
will live with the people in six months to complete the four courses. the SCD 193 A will
be their first task to do in the community, in order to complete the course, they must live
with the people to know the people’s various way of living. The students have to build
rapport with the community to approach the people well. The students are required to gather
an information through interviewing people in their houses and the students will use a
survey instruments as a tool for collecting a data, the students will also update the spot map
including the boundaries and the population of the community.

The department collaborated with the Non- Governmental Organization of

MARADECA, Barangay Lumbac and the Municipality of Buadiposo-buntong . the
students assigned in Barangay Lumbac is Aminolah, Noralden M., and Abduljabbar,
Mobarak R.

Lumbac is one of the best barangay in Buadiposo-buntong, the people’s participation

and their officials are well organized. It is located along the highway going to nearby
municipality. Barangay also has creek which comes from east to west. It also features
having wide rice field area and also upland for planting different kind of vegetables.

II. Major Accomplishments

In July 27, the Faculty members with the students held a practicum orientation to
discuss an overview about the practicum courses, the orientation also tackled the
safety of the students, and what to bring in the community. It also finalized the
section of the students.
In July 4, we Section 1 students went to MARADECA office to orient us about the
assignment area, Supervisor Faridah asked us how many of the students are willing
to assign in Surigao. But unfortunately its rush hour if we deploy after the
orientation day, the field instructors decided to deploy us in Bubong Ramain, Ditsa-
an Ramain, and Buadiposo buntong.
In July 13, the female students in section 1 were designated in Ditsa-an Ramain and
Bubong Ramain
In July 19, we the four male students designated at Buadiposo-buntong, before we
assign in the community, we went to the Municipality of Buadiposo-buntong to
have a courtesy call. The present officials are the Vice Mayor Minry, Sir Mac,
MARADECA supervisor and Ma’am Aira together with our field instructor Ma’am
Omolkhair and Department chairperson Ma’am Edna. Abduljabbar and I were
assigned in Barangay Lumbac, Saiben and Cabilangan is assigned in Barangay
Minanga.
In July 25, started to introduce ourselves in the community we do transect walk,
and build rapport with the community people
In August 6, we practicum students have a tactic session with Ma’am Omolkhair,
Sir Roel, and Ma’am Go in Barangay Madanding. We updated to our field
instructors the status of the Barangay and the Updated Sketch map of the
community. Also Ma’am Omolkhair gave us the format of the survey instrument
and briefly discussed to us how we are going to deliver it to the people.
In August 11, 2022, we assisted the DSWD employee to facilitate the people
because they validated the 4ps. members
In August 19, Saiben and I borrowed the printer at team Timber, when I got the
printer at Guest house of Barangay Lumbac, I Downloaded the printer application
in 6 hours in the middle of the night and then I printed the household numbers and
the survey instrument.
In august 20, we posted the household numbers to the walls of the peoples’ houses
to determine how many household heads and household numbers in the barangay.
In August 21, we started doing a community profile with Bapa Basher’s son Arsad.
We finished interviewing 20 people in a day.
In august 25, we have struggled of having a sleepless night because Bapa Basher
sponsored the Multi-purpose as a venue for their Radio Frequency Anniversary.
And also they invited a 3 Onor singers to entertain them, we can’t sleep because we
assisted Bapa Basher until they had done in the dawn.
In August 28, Barak and I cleaned the Guest house and the Multi-purpose Hall to
prepare for Tactic session, but we asked a permission to Bapa Basher first before
doing a preparation. When our field instructors Ma’am Omo and Ma’am Aisha
together with the MARADECA organizer Ma’am Jaliah arrived, we started the
tactic session, Barak and I gave an update about our surveyed houses, the household
numbers, and the finalized sketched map of the barangay.
In August 30, I got an eye infection because I thought it was just an eye redness, it
happened 4 days ago. I went home to check up in the eye specialist, I am thankful
that the cataract didn’t grow bigger. Alhamdulillah I got a medication for my eyes.
In September 5, Barak and I assisted the Gagaw ko pagtaw Organization for their
meeting with the USAID and the MARADECA before the Installation of the Solar
Street Lights.
In September 9, we helped Bapa Basher and the BPAT members to dig a hole for
the solar street lights. After the digging, the USAID installed 10 street lights in
Barangay Lumbac. And in the night I illustrated the Spot Map.

In Octor 8, we started writing the visual aids of the tabulated data.

In October 11, we finished all the Visual aids and the Spot Map. This is the day of
Community Validation, after all the struggles and barriers we’ve been. We still
managed to deliver the results of the data

III. Problems / Issues Encountered

• The problem I encountered during our Community Profiling is the chairman’s rival
in politics because the Cabsaran family don’t entertain us when we go to their
houses, even if we wait, they don’t respond a single word.
• In the morning of our Community Validation, we are visiting the Lumbac people in
their houses to remind them of our Community Validation. When we passed by in
the area of Pualas Chairman, his men called me to speak to the chairman. I thought
that I was only going to be asked about the Community Validation but then,
Chairman of Pualas told me badly that the north area of Lumbac left or right side
of the road he claims that it is all Pualas area. He told me too that when we practicum
students walks alone in the community to collect people’s data he can freely tell
his men to beat us where we stand. While he was saying a word, Mobarak invites
the Lumbac people, when Mobarak saw me with the Chairman of Pualas, he came
near us to check on me. Then the chairman asked me if we asked a permission to
the Municipal Mayor and the Lumbac chairman to do a community profiling in the
community. After he says a word, if he saw us again in their area he won’t hesitate
to do anything to us. His last word to us said, that the Barangay Lumbac
Chairwoman and her Kagawad members knows more of this community than us so
let them do it. That time I don’t know what to do, my brains can’t say to continue
inviting people. Instead, we get back to the Guest house. the remaining time to start
the validation is only 30 mins, I got scared because it came to my mind that our
participants in the north side won’t attend the Community Validation. When Bapa
Basher asked me how many participants will arrive, I only said that we didn’t
invited their people at north because Pualas Chairman warned us to go there.

IV. Actions Taken

➢ Basher Mariano told us not to include the Cabsaran families, we’ll just get their
profiles at the barangay, but instead we didn’t check their profile status because its
way different than our survey instruments.
➢ We didn’t took an action to fix the barangay conflict, but we invited again the
houses at the Lumbac street, or in the southern part of the barangay if there are more
available people to attend.
➢ Alhamdulillah after all the barriers we experienced, we still got through the bad
lucks. We awaited the participants to attend until 1:30pm the participants reached
in more than 30 participants, as we started the program, luckily we recovered from
mental blocks in our mind and we delivered the Validation properly to the
participants.

V. Learning Insights
✓ In my two months living with the community people, I learned from them during
our Community profiling, the respondents are sharing their problems and the
experiences they went through, the way they sharing while I see the status of their
house.
✓ I learned how to use the resources efficiency especially water, we fetch a water from
the rainfall, we use streams even if its rusty to take a bath. It is a big challenge for
me because it was my first time to be dependent, to not depend on other people’s
capabilities.
