English – Great Expectations

Character sketch of main characters in Great Expectations

Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1861. The novel has several important
characters, but the main ones are:

Pip - The protagonist of the story, Pip is a young orphan boy who lives with his sister and her husband.
He is kind-hearted, loyal, and intelligent, but also vulnerable and easily swayed by those around him. He
longs for a better life and dreams of becoming a gentleman, which he believes is possible when he is
unexpectedly given money by an unknown benefactor.

Estella - The love interest of Pip, Estella is a beautiful and cold-hearted girl who is raised by the
wealthy and eccentric Miss Havisham. Estella is taught to break men's hearts and she does so with Pip,
leading him to love her despite her cruel treatment of him.

Miss Havisham - An elderly and wealthy spinster who is jilted at the altar on her wedding day, Miss
Havisham becomes a recluse and raises Estella to be a heartbreaker. She manipulates Pip into falling in
love with Estella, and ultimately redeems herself by recognizing her mistakes and trying to make
amends.

Abel Magwitch - A convict who escapes from prison and becomes Pip's secret benefactor, Abel
Magwitch is a complex character who is both menacing and sympathetic. He helps Pip become a
gentleman and returns to England to see him before his death.

Joe Gargery - Pip's kind-hearted and loyal brother-in-law, Joe is a blacksmith who is always willing to
help Pip in any way he can. Joe is a symbol of goodness and simplicity, and his love and kindness serve
as a contrast to the greed and ambition of other characters in the novel.
